Question sticking brake caliper

Yesterday and today i noticed a strange smell coming from my truck when i got home from work. It kinda smelled like a burnt clutch, but since i have an auto it ruled that out. I checked all of the rims and the passenger rear was very warm. I jacked up the truck and noticed the wheel was difficult to spin so i took the tire off. I messed with caliper a little and it freed up, but when i hit the brakes again the caliper was stuck again. I dont really know alot about brakes so i was curious to know if there is something i could do to fix the problem or will something have to be replaced?

crack open the bleeder and see if the wheel will spin. If it will, probably need to replace the hose. Caliper should be o.k. if it will spin after releasing the pressure from the hose. If no, then I would replace the caliper as well.

Sounds like the slides need to cleaned, inspected for pits and greased. If the Caliper was sticking it would not let go.

One other issue to note.... If it is the slide and it is rusty, bet is that the other rear is in the same conditon and if the slides and not clean and lubed, they will cause a brake pulse that will drive you nuts.
Take the time and inspect the others. It will save you money ion the long run.

Last night i took everything apart and cleaned and lubed it. It all seemed to be working just fine last night and this morning, but when i got home tonight the rotor and rim were just as hot as before. I am officially stumped so i guess I am gonna have to bite the bullet and take it in to the shop to have it looked at.

just one side? I'm telling you it is a hose! They are fine cold, but after they get a little hot, they completely collapse inside ( NOT VISIBLE ) and hold the pressure on the brake. IF you crack open the bleeder when it is stuck, the wheel should move freely. If you close the bleeder and hit the brakes again pretty hard, then it will be stuck on again. You can provide enough pressure to push fluid past the collapsed part, but the square cut o- ring in the caliper can't push the fluid back to release the brake. Its a little tough to do when it is hot, but I'll bet my next paycheck it is a hose!

Thats just it when i was messing with the brakes the other night everything was cold. I had the truck up on the stands and the wheel off if i tried to turn the hub it wouldnt move, but if i lightly tapped on the caliper it freed right up. If i pushed the brake pedal it would seize up and i couldnt turn it until i tapped on the caliper. Like i said i dont know too much about brakes, but if the hose collapses when its hot then it must be something else right?

It's the caliper pistons! I have the same problem on the same exact side! I took mine off and noticed one piston was rusty and the rubber boot around it was ripped! You're looking at $140 or so with a $50 core when you return the old one! Take my word for it, I know the smell all too well!

I would have to agree now after getting the whole story. The way I was reading it, was it was fine until after driving the truck. If it does it cold it probably is the caliper. I would buy both and replace them both at the same time. They both push out and back in every time you hit the brakes. Replaceing only one can also give you a brake pull. 140 bucks is way high though. It should be more like 40 bucks plus core.

Well the caliper ended up being the problem. When we got the old one off one of the pistons was stuck out. I tried to use a vise to push it back in and it didnt move! Another problem that i ran into was the banjo bolt that holds the brake hose to the caliper broked when i took it out. I put the wrench on it and i thought it was coming out kinda easy then i noticed it was only half of the bolt. The bad part is i had to order the bolt and it wont be here until tuesay!

Wink

If you live in a snow area. It`s always the right front that fails.
Pistons get corroded and hang up...
