Is it possible to convert a 2500 SRW to a 3500?

I have a SRW 2500 (GVWR is 9000). If I went thru the trouble of changing out the rear leaf springs to that of a 3500, would I be able to have it re-tagged/re-badged/re-characterized as a 3500? Or is it "once a 2500, always a 2500" sorta thing?

(rear leafs are the *only* difference between 2500 and 3500 from all that I've read)

Actually it's just the overloads that are the difference. Sure you could add those and get the stops welded onto the frame and get the truck re-classed by the state police(that's how it works here in Virginia). Or, just do like I did and add Timbrens, or air bags, and have the same weight hauling/pulling capacity. You may have to pay more taxes for a 3500 too.

You'll never be able to overcome the door GVWR. Just the way it is. It depends on how a state enforces the rules if it will matter or not.

If you want a 3500, trade in your truck, and buy one. If you want the hauling ability, add some timbrens and air bags, and live with the 2500. But, don't be surprised if you haul heavy, get pulled over, and get a ticket with the 2500...

Highly unlikely to get hassled if you are hauling privately UNLESS you cause an accident...
