I heard of this problem months ago, but it seems like it has yet to materialize into a known flaw or problem. I would think that if it were as bad as it seems then we would see it popping up here and there and to the best of my knowledge that has not been the case. I have friends at the local dealership and I try to stay up to date with the problems they are seeing but have yet to hear of this. I can't say I'd be all that upset, because then it would leave me with no choice but to get the stage 5 ATS.

If it's that bad of a problem, I suspect we'll be seeing a lot of them fail before we get 70k on the clock.

Yeah, that problem is why you could only get an exhaust brake for a short period of time with the auto. The backpressure was trashing the thrust washer. It was supposed to be taken care of for 05 though.

I wonder if the guy was running an exhaust brake on the truck when all that happened? The article says bone stock but that was in reference to performance.

That report has been floating around for a while, prolly since late 2003. I dont know why they wouldn`t have changed that washer out yet.
I will say that i have almost 50,000, 10,000 of that with the Ez hooked up, and i have no problems.

I haven`t heard of anyone else on THESE boards have a problem with it yet either.

i will be watching this thread to see where it goes....

From what I heard the 03-05 with 48re has had the problems with the thrust washer during exhaust brake use only. What I understand is the back pressure on the transmission during brake use cause the thrust washer to fail
