Opppps 4.10s
hi, this being my first post, I'm a little green. please bare with me. Took my first trip with my 03 2500 4x4, 48r,(heres the opps i think) 4.10 gears. Freeway 14mpg at 70, 2200rpm, Just bought used. Am I in trouble?? maybe bigger tires?? Dont no if things will improve with age or not got 11000 miles on it. Any thoughts??? thanks
Re:Opppps 4.10s
I get 16 combo driving,18.5 freeway unloaded. And 12 to 13 loaded about 11,000 lbs.My 2nd gens numbers were all lower than that and it had the 3.5s .IMHO the 4.10s are the only way to go ;D
Re:Opppps 4.10s
You will find a huge variance in what people report as their mileage. There are tons of real world variables as well as what people are using to determine their mileage. Don't rely on the overhead computer.
I have an '03 with the 48RE and 4.10 gears and at 70 on the highway you should be turning about 2150 rpms with the stock tires. At that speed I generally get around 16.5 - 18.0 mpg depending on hills and wind direction. I have just over 11000 miles.

Re:Opppps 4.10s
Welcome to the forum.
I have 4.10 with six speed. I will get 20 on interstate if I don't go over 70. I get 15 poking around in town. I can pull about 21 at 60 on the state highways. Just have to keep your foot out of it - - which is hard. 8)

Re:Opppps 4.10s
I too shared your concerns after reading everybody else's higher MPG's.
Your numbers seem comparable with mine. The gearing is but one factor in your reduced mpg reading.
Others include:
-your SO motor
-Your CA SO motor
-4X4
Don't get freaked out by all the posts. I came to realize that CA is but one of two (or three?) states that force the SO on us. The majority of members posting do not live in those two or three states.
The good news is that unless you bump into somebody with an out of state rig, you are still the big dog!!!

I also have an '03 HO CTD 48RE 4.10LS 4x4, and going 70mph at 2200rpm , I usually average 15mpg to 16 mpg. Don't worry, it only gets better as the mileage goes up. Good luck with the new truck and welcome aboard.

Re:Opppps 4.10s
I have 4.10s with a 6 speed and have gotten a high of 20.2 MPG at 60 MPH. I get about 17 at 70MPH and 15 at 75+. This is 1 to 2 MPG better than my 2000 with 3.54s would get in the same situation. I only have 10K on my 04 and expect the mileage to go up until about 20K like my 00 did.I put over 200K on my Y2K and hand checked most tanks.
