ok - old subject new question! oil/gas

ok - sorry to have to ask.. but does it really do any harm to start doing something like "diesel kleen and 1/2 quart" oil to a tank of fuel when the truck only has 2500 miles on it... ie: a new truck not even broken in... I know all the old timers used oil but the injector pumps/etc have changed on the new truck and are not like the old ones that where made when sulfur was used as a lube/etc...

** guess I have to decide on my own... I talk to ten people and get 20 answers... most do it... but then a old timer comes along and throws a wrench into my world and says you better watch it....

Personal opinions below.

As long as your past initial breakin, 500 miles or so, I don't see a problem putting a tried and true Diesel fuel additive in.

I'd never put oil in the tank, used or new, that's what respectable additives are for.

Forget about putting ATF in, bad mojo.

Just drive it like you stole it and leave the "fix in a can" on the shelf.

IMHO

it's funny how diff. web forms have diff. ways of LIVING with ones truck!! I was over at DieselRam.com and it seems a lot of people use ND 30 wt. oil and some form of Diesel Kleen or a look a like... some seem to use M. Myst. Oil...

I've been using an additive in mine, trying one called Power Kleaner by Howes Lubricator Products. Probanly will keep using one till someone comes out with a diffinative reason not to. At the rate lift pumps and injectors seem to be failing, don't see how it could hurt. Don't think I'd be dumping oil in tho.
ckennedy, any word on the grid pre-heat?

As long as what you dump in is petroleum based and does not have alcohol, water, or junk floating in it you will do no harm.

Will anything you dump in do any good? Beats me. I don't know enough about the new common rail pumps to make an informed guess. I know the VE and VP44 rotary pumps like extra lubrication. In winter an anti-gel and water separator additive is a good idea on any truck.

Second that, Use Howes's lubricator and diesel kleen or (whatever snake oil), fleetguard asphaltene (cummins) additive in my truck and all our work engines. Couldn't help it when yuppies post saying used oil is okay in a 3rd gen. Snapped.. lost it and got flamed for being cheeky. Old timers, my 70 year old father used oil new or used in his former 12 valve cummins. Even he is against it in the newer rigs.

I find it interesting that NOT many post on Fleetguard additives... I think I shall check them out... between them and Standyne (?) spelling (which cummins notes)... one should find a good additive... also no one can say anything if they ask you what you put in your tank!!

the above and a few oz's of Lucas Top Cyn. lube (OIL).. one should be good to goooooooooooo....

ckennedy, you are in dream land, no offense. Your truck will last just as long if you just put regular diesel fuel in, without ever putting additves in. Most of us just put them in to feel a little warm and fuzzy or for anti gel purposes. I wouldn't get too out of control concoting your special potions , to arrive at which you've added their marketing nonsense upon each other to create the master formula.. Just throw some powerservice or redline or whatever your favorite diesel fuel additive in and be done. Forget the used oil. Forget anything made by lucas for that matter. Hate to borrow the cliche - but it's snake oil!!

you are right!.... but guess "we" all can't help it... I am having the same issues on what to start using in the way on OIL.... was going to use a SYN. and a AMSOIL dual bypass... found out I can basically get AMSOIL for the same $$ as MOBIL...

I hate having these type of problems...

One good way to take care of your truck is to keep the fuel tank full. Less air means less condinsation (water), the higher the fuel level the less work the LP has to do. I never let mine get below 1/2.

i was told by my cummins guy, and my dealer that i should put a conditioner every 3rd tank....and that the cummins likes too be driven hard....not like a little old man.

Just my 2 cents
