Old subject of oil smeel in cab
I have not been on the forum in a while so you guys may have figures this out.
For a long time I had read of people complaing abou an oil smell inside the truck after changing oil
Mine did it this week for the first time after changing the oil.
WHat happens is, if you miss the fill hole, oil runs down between that flimsy platic cover they have on the vavle covers and then get on the hor engine and is sucked into the cab.
At least that is what happened to mine.

Good post. I've got 8,000 on mine and have not had the dreaded smell for at least the last 3000 miles. Just had the oil changed again and I guess they hit the hole cause no smell after the oil change

I noticed the smell right after changing the oil. Don't recall any spilling. The smell went away.
Although the oil only has 1100 miles on it and it's already black (2700 total miles). This normal on the 600s? I thought that the oil was supposed to stay clean much longer.

Thanks Aaron. Will be a long time before my oil is due for a change, but when it is we'll see how new oil does. I had the TSB done. Main thing, I think, is that I end up doing a lot of around-town driving.
Well you all will think I'm nuts, as does my wife, when I say this but I love the "smell" after an oil change. I use Rotella. And no I don't spill any. It's the additives from the oil that cause the odor-so I'm told.
I also like the odor that gets into the cab from the crankcase vent. Perfume to me
Cruising down the highway then stop at a redlight and there it is for my nose to behold!
That and the "music" my engine makes (The cummins 600's are cool but I'm not so keen on their "silence"), makes me hesitant to sell it but I so need a 4-door because of my kids.

I never had it until my last oil change...Shell Rotella or smella T 15w/40. It's supposed to be the best, from the test data I've seen, in terms of dino oil, but I don't know if I can take the smell for another 7.5K.
How is the Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5w/40? Is it stinky too?

Let's see...I changed my oil and filter at 15K (Stratapore & Rotella T 15w/40). With that change, I noticed as slight gear oil smell every now and then from the engine area (vent tube). Now I have nearly 20K and I still get a nasty wiff in the cab depending on the breeze. So we are going on 5k of occasional stink. When I change it again at 22.5K, I don't know what I will use. I may try the Rotella 5w/40. Hopefully it doesn't have that funky twinge...
THE SMELL YOU ARE ALL TALKING ABOUT COMES FROM THE CRANKCASE. IF YOU CAN'T STAND THE SMELL YOU CAN PUT A LEMON SCENT ADDITIVE IN THE OIL AT THE TIME OF THE OIL CHANGE. YOU CAN GET THIS AT YOUR DEALER. PART NUMBER 5139947AA.
