Oily film, vent hose
Oily film, vent hose
I will first start by saying I am not a Mechanic so if some of my terminology is off try not to roast me. I usually do my own minor service work on my truck like the oil and fuel filter, air filter stuff like that. When i change my oil I usually see a little oily film on the transimission pan and the bell housing right in front of the tranny pan. To be a little more specific there is a small plate that is on the bottom of the bell housing that is usually covered. Anyway I thought the oil was coming from the black vent hose on the driverside of the truck in front of the oil pan. well today i changed my oil and noticed a lot more oil then I have ever seen under there. it wasn't enough to be dripping but the tranny pan and the cross member behind had an oily film on them and below the black vent hose on the axle you could see where the oil was coming out of this hose. Now that i have really bored everyone is why could I have so much oil coming out of the hose. I was not low on oil. Could there have been to much in there the last time I changed it?? I always check it and it is usually right at the full line. My wife just came back from Virginia with it towing our horse trailer down and back and did not have any problems with it. any help is appreciated.

I guess I ought to stick to the 1st gen forums.
The older 24 valves have them, so I ASSumed that 3rd gens did.
It does sound like you have a lot of blowby, how many miles on the truck?

I have 37700 on it. I don't hammer it, I change the oil every 4000- 5000 miles and it is bone stock. I only tow our horse trailer. If I had alittle to much oil in it would it come out the vent tube? BART

I got tired of crawling under there to drain the oil and seeing the film all over the place, so, at the last oil change, I saw that piece of heater hose hanging in the garage and decided to shove about 8 or 10" of it on the breather tube. Now it pukes just below the bottom of the rear end if my eyeball estimation was correct. That was 2k miles ago. I cleaned the oily film off after the oil drained but haven't looked to see if the extension has helped.
