Oily Film

I really don't know any way to explain this, I changed my oil today and noticed diectly behind the oil pan on what I think is the Tranny case there is an oily film or grease. It is the dark color of oil. It does not look like oil is running out but it is there. I poked around alittle and the grease film looks like it originates at the rear of the oil pan. The bolts must be loose or the gasket is bad. Does anyone know if the bolt have to be torqued, if so what is it. Any other suggestions are appreciated. I have 13,810 miles on the truck and did not notice this the last time I changed my oil which was about 5,000 miles ago.

Likely it is oil vapors from the crankcase vent tube. I'd wipe off any drips and just keep an eye on it.

That's a tuffy to diagnose. Just wipe it off as clean as possible and check it daily to see if it returns. If it does check again for the origin. A fresh oil trail is easier to follow. My previous 01.5 CTD developed an oil leak in the same area that turned out to be the rear of the valve cover gasket leaking. The gasket was replaced under warranty. Since yours is under warranty I wouldnt even mess with it. But should you decide to try you could try retorquing the pan bolts but I doubt that is the problem. If you do decide to do so, be careful not to over tighten them. Too many times I have seen gaskets cut and leak worse. Been there, done that. Hopefully the pan gasket has the steel inserts to keep the gasket from being crushed and cut. Good luck and keep us posted.

well my truck has the same thing except i now have a drip comming from that same spot. also my tansmission and transfer case. its not the breather line as it is most likley on the other side of the engine. any ways it's your rear main seal i am willing to bet.watch it for a while and it will eventually get worse. mine is going into the shop on the second of july to get it fixed. good luck and keep an eye on it, if its under warrenty get them to replace it.

On my 01.5 I also thought it had to be the rear main seal leaking. I took it in and the shop found the valve cover leaking in the rear near the firewall which is very hard to see.

Thanks guys for the help. I think I'm just going to leave it alone and keep an eye on it. If it starts getting worse I will have the dealer fix it. With my luck I would snap one of the bolts off.
