Oil pressure
That's what Dodge thinks you want to see, so that's where the gauge reads. Your oil pressure gauge reading is meaningless, it's a fancy idiot light. Read more about it in these threads.
oil press.
if your oil press. drops below a given press. for a given rpm the engine protection will log a fault and if set for shut down it will shut down in a set time , one thing you dont want to do is get the lastest fix from Cummins , your gauge will read 55 psi at all times and if the press. drop below 8 psi I believe, then it will log a fault , but wont do any other rpm ranges .

I don't think the engine will shut down automatically. Have you had experience with this happening? The gauge will not read 55 all the time. However, the ECM oil pressure map is telling the gauge what to display as long as the the oil pressure stays above 8 psi. If it goes below 8psi, the gauge is displayed at zero. The map is based on coolant temperature and engine rpm.
The best thing to do is add a mechanical gause. There is a tapped hole on top of the oil filter housing that makes it very easy to add one. My personal favorite is the 3 gauge A piller mount with oil pressure, lift pump fuel pressure, and boost. Sure makes me feel a little more at ease with what the engine is doing. It would be nice if you could plug the mechanical pressure tap into the back of the gauge in the dash, so that you could monitor EGT in the A-pillar, but I haven't heard of this being possible.
Anyone else know?
