Oil Pressure
Your oil pressure gauge is not telling you what your actual op is.It's only the ECM's estimate of what it thinks it should be.The only thing you op guage is actually telling you is that if you see any reading at all, that means you have at least 6psi.Which is what the op switch is set at which in turn closes the switch circut and the preprogramed parameters loaded into the ecm by DC engineers takes over your guage telling you what they think you should be experiencing in a normal cummins eng.read your electric diagrams nowhere in your truck is there an oil pressure sending unit, only the on-off switch.

I think it's because most people don't understand what they are looking at, and if they continuously see a gauge jumping all around it freaks them out. So like with coolant temp, it's pretty much a dummy gauge that shows low 40's p.s.i. all the time unless something is wrong. Its a shame too, because with a real gauge we may be able to foresee a catastrophic failure and take action to prevent it. With the factory gauge that won't happen.
On a side not, my Dad has a Porsche 911 and it has a "real" oil pressure gauge. It's fun watching that thing go up and down with RPM.

Gotcha. They were over budget for sensors, but had software development budget left over, so they saved $0.06 per unit by using a switch, and spent $30,000 on developing and testing the software.
So typical.
What I wonder, is why include a gauge at all. If it's just a dummy gauge, then why not just have an idiot light and call it a day?
Wait...I know...because gauges look cool.
