At first I thought you didn't have a 4x4. Maybe be more careful?? I just lie under mine and reach up and unscrew it - no muss no fuss. I removed mine about 7 times now and have never spilled anything out onto my hand or arm. There might a slight spill over the lip of the can, but nothing to write home about.

Mine's a 2003 4x4 and it don't spill any oil for some reason, maybe because I let it drain for a hour or so? But a friend of mine has a Ford and it uses a huge filter, he don't lke handling the weight of it filled with oil so he puches a hole it the bottom with a screw driver and lets it drain. Another Idea?
I changed mine yesterday and didn't spill anything while reaching from the bottom and using the tool from Geno's. The tool was slipping though, so I used a hacksaw to slice the wall of the tool in six places, deburred the slots, put a large hose clamp on the tool, and it fit perfectly on the filter where I had to lightly force it on. No more slipping, but I will look for a metal tool for use next time.

Changed mine yesterday...I have a second oil drain pan that I put underneath the filter while the oil drains from the pan. I unscrew the filter enough to have it start dripping and once it's stopped, I take it off all the way and keep the filter vertical. Still get a bit of oil on the hands, but otherwise it's pretty neat.
A trick I learned when changing the oil on my 4.7 Dakota was to cut the bottom off a liter soda bottle, leave the cap on... slip it over filter loosen first) then just use your hand to remove the filter , any drips fall into the bottle. I tried the freezer bag and this is much easier for me.
