Hi Guys Brought home new o4 last week was gonna order a new one but the hold on the 6speeds kinda scared me didnt want wait all summer ! Have had CDL for 27 yrs this is first rig when taking foot off trottle takes forever for RPM to drop. Even waiting several seconds before depressing clutch it seems like, sounds like clutch is slipping ? or is sound turbo winding down ? if its clutch life wont be long. NORMAL ?? THANX
BTW first tank mixed montain city slow fast trying to break in right 17.73 mpg hand figgered

 

You shouldn't have to wait several seconds for the rpm to drop between shifts. There was actually a fix for a problem like that awhile ago. Unfortunately, I can't tell you the specifics (memory goin bad). If you bought it from a private seller, you may want to take it to your dealer and have him give you the service updates(reflash the ECM).

 

actually drops Maybe 100 rpms ALMOST immediatlly then very slowly drops but way to slow

 

Just to give you a benchmark, I also have an 04 6 speed, and I'm a pretty quick shifter. Mine will drop about 300-400 rpms fairly quickly when shifting. Sounds like something is definitely out of whack on yours, but doesn't seem significant. Like bb said, I would have it checked to make sure.

 

talked to one service guy so far he said no computer adjust ment available dont know if he knows any thing or not sure somebody else will speak up if they had the problem THANX

 

Mine has been the same as twoshot's since day one. There was some wishful thinking that the CO2 recall on the early 03's would fix this annoyance but it did not. For those that do not know the CO2 recall was in regards to a cruise control problem on the early 03 six speeds. There were reports of the cruise control not disengaging after extended periods of use. I never experienced the problem but rather than continuing to wear a helmet, I had the recall done anyway just in case. The recall involved a reflash of the ECM. You will get use to it in time and shifts will become effortless and as smooth as silk.

 

Mine is also the same. Has been from day one. I now have it timed to release the fuel before shifting/clutching. Took a while but it works good now.

 

Mine will take time to wind down if I stick my foot in it and wind it up over 2400 RPM. I must get off the throttle moments before I hit the clutch or the engine will surge before it starts to slow. I usally shift around 2000-2200 and it shifts easly with a 500 RPM drop to the next gear.

 

The computer and common rail cause this. It slows down shifting a bunch compared to old school. Probably the most annoying feature when pulling a heavy load is waiting for the rpm's to drop where they match the next taller gear in the meantime mph are dropping too. I liked the character of the 2nd gen engines better overall, especially at startup where it would fire instantly and rock the cab ooooh baby that was sweet. I just do not like being put on hold to shift for what seems like forever but is actually 3/4 second or a bit more. The faster you shift the harder it shifts. Oh well these new engines are cleaner and quieter. I do like that, and fuel mileage is what I expected this time.

 

havnt hauled heavy load yet but thats what worries me. Going up steep grade losing road speed trying to upshift

 

I have pulled up many a hill with a slow start. I will wind it up to 25-28k and slowly back off the throttle until it quits excellerating and then shift. The shift is quicker this way and I usually catch the next gear around 17K. Always try to keep it at or above 15k when pulling.
