Large idle speed drop shifting into Drive
98 12v with an automatic. Had to turn up idle in park to about 1100+ to stay at 700+ once in drive. Truck stalls going from park to drive. However, once you do get it into drive it is fine, doesn't stall at idle, does not pull hard against brakes at stop....ie don't think I have a torque conter issue. It is more apt to stall going into drive when cold, but is not immune to the problem once it is heated up. Any suggestions welcome.

It almost sounds like there could be something wrong internally with the transmission... either an adjustment (shift linkage, or bands), or leakage causing 2 of the wrong clutch packs to apply temporarily at the same time causing it to engage 2 gears at the same time. Does the problem happen when you shift from N to D? (keep in mind that to go from P to D you have to go thru R briefly to get there) What about if you go from P to R... same problem? R to D?
