Newbie here...reflash?

I am the proud owner of my first Diesel (see in sig). I have been viewing this forum for months whie I was searching, I would like to thank all of you for sharing so much info.

I have heard that some people get a TSB computer reflash from the dealer for "poor fuel mileage" and that bumps them up about 2 mpg.

I have been driving it pretty easy for the first couple tanks to break it in. So far I have about 1500 miles on her in 3 weeks, and averaging about 16.4 MPG (hand calculated), 18 MPG overhead. 50/50 city, highway.

Also, any additional advice for a Noob? Any probelms I should watch out for? I am ordering some basic stuff to protect it (mats, bedrug, toneau, seatcovers, etc) I just didnt know if any of you have some "what to watch for" stuff?

Thanks a lot guys

3:73 or 4:10?

the 06's had a LOT of flashes - i would think an 07 would have those in the base programming, but DC ain't the brightest folks around.

I have a 6 speed and I rarely get over 16 mpg on an average tank . I just had mine reflashed for long cranking issues and I haven't noticed a change in mpg. Also I have 11,000 miles on my truck, yours should get better as the engine breaks in, at least that's what I've heard.

Don't do any reflashes unless you have a specific problem to fix (long crank, white smoke etc). Flashes are known to change things like shift points, length of dome light duration, and other little gremlins that you won't notice till later, then you've gotta go back for some more mystery programming.

Alot depends on the individual dealership/technician weather they will even do a reflash or know which one to do. That said, I don't think there is a specific "poor mileage" flash anyway, if there was there would be a line around the block to get it!

A Smarty and/or Bully Triple dog can take care of programming issues without having to go to the dealer.

By the way 16+ is very good, especially for an '07!

I just purchased a 07 3500 Mega 5.9 DRW and I am getting 18+ highway and 14+ city. So to me that sounds low. But from personal experience updating flashes change everything as dale29 said.

This is more or less the exact truck I have and I don't get near that... are you going off overhead or hand calc? I am seeing more around 17 highway, somewhere around high 15's low 16 with mix and low 15 or less all city.

I'm going w/ the overhead. but I reset it just as I get on the highway, that way it gives me true highway milage and it doesnt average in the city w/ it... does that make sense...

NOT true - the algorithm has changed, in a 05 or prior, it would show 0.0 at a stop, or 99.99 on a coast.

now when you reset the overhead, it shows the previous MPG, and uses it to factor off of.

there's a TSB about that posted on this forum.

06 overheads are usually 2mpg too optimistic, in other words, hand calculate it.

shoot me a PM with your e-mail addy if you want an excel spread sheet to do your MPG.

My overhead is almost always 2 mpg higher than actual mileage... does that make sense....?

I have an 06 but basically get the same as this. Unless you are having an actual long cranking issue (like 10-30 seconds or more) to crank over to start don't worry about the reflash. Just give it time to break in. I'm in the same boat as you as I only have 6K miles and know it is hard to wait until 20-30K for the mileage increase when the motor breaks in more. Things I did to help short term were DIY 4" intake tube, Proguard 7 OEM style filter, holes in the bottom of the airbox, Rokktech sensor and towing my 12K # toy hauler around. Toy anything you can and it will help break the motor in faster.
