And the new automatic tranny for 2007 is! ....

Seems like there are those on this board who are wondering what DC will offer for an automatic tranny in 2007 ... so based on what they did with the manual (the G56) this should be the new automatic tranny ... the Mercedes-Benz AGS 6-speed!!!

Looks nice, has some respectable specs.

Forget about the Aisin ... they don't make anything that works with over 450 lb/ft of torque.

The automated manuals are huge transmissions, there is no way one of those is going in a pickup from the factory.

They don't drive quite like an automatic, either. The ECM defuels the engine for each shift - can you imagine the complaints from people used to traditional automatics on that little quirk? The empty, around town acceleration is like a manual transmision, most customers would not stand for that. Another neat little featurure is that you have to do a little power braking to get moving on hills.

Don't get me wrong, I think they are an excellent medium duty truck trans. I am trying to get the company I work for to try one instead of the Allisons that keep blowing up. But the Allison is $1500 cheaper...

I am sure someone will come out with a box for the defueling issue. I think it looks pretty cool if they can get it to fit..

Uh, it has to defuel so the shift solenoids can pull the gears out of mesh and then shift into the next gear.

The automated transmissions only use the clutch to start moving, the clutch is not used during shifts. If you've ever driven a manual trans without using the clutch, you understand how this trans works. When it is time for a shift, the ECM ignores the signal coming from the accelerator pedal sensor and takes over throttle control until the shift is completed. It feels as if the accelerator has gone "dead" while the shift is taking place. It is a fast shift, faster than a human driver could make smoothly, but it is not done under power like an automatic.

It's like having a really good truck driver hiding under the floorpan doing the shifting for you. The feel is totally different than an automatic. That's not a bad thing, except people are used to the way an automatic performs and that is what they expect when they buy a vehicle with an automatic transmission. It's really a trans for guys who like manuals but have a bad knee and a torn rotator cuff.

See that proves my point that most of the people that buy trucks dont understand the real purpose of a truck ..............I would buy it if it came in a truck. But hey thats just me. The heavier the duty the better. I upgrade so I dont over do it.......but like my wife also says gimme time and I will find the limits of almost any thing.
