Mystery Puddle Under Truck

As best I can tell I have a leak near/under my fuel pump filter. If the truck sets for a couple days on my cement drive the stain will be about 18 inches accross. If I leave with the truck for a few hours and come back it is gone. I can not tell if it is leaking out of the drain tube from the filter. Going to attach a plastic bag with a rubber band to the tube and see if that is the leak. If it is leaking from the back of the filter where the tube comes from the tank, I would think the fuel would not dry up...dont know.

Could it be water leaking from the drain valve of the filter??

Also, while looking for the leak I checked the power steering pump at the lower end of the steering column. The fluid was jet black and very thick. Is this normal? It's very different from my gas motor PS pump...it's red.

Thanks

The power steering uses ATF-4 that is why it is red. Can't help with the puddle.

Are you sure it's not the water pump? Depending on how you're parked it might be running to a different place before hitting the ground.

agreed, I'd think Fuel leaks would leave a stain on concrete.

Does it smell like fuel? Or oil? Or ATF? A white piece of paper may help identify it.

It looks kind of slimely, no smell and when I rub my fingers accross it, very little will come up. Will any fuel come out the tube when the level is turned to let out the water? that could be leaking. I will get to the bottom of it tomorrow.

Yes.

The lever will drain the fuel bowl...water and fuel

It's +/- a quart I think. Usually drain it into my oil pan...but the fuel/water runs out the front axle tubes an pumpkin...makes a mess. Basically don't do on asphalt paving or surface you care about

I purchased some aquarium tubing to go over the drain tube to extend it when I change my fuel filter.

As for the puddle, check your coolant line next to the turbo where they have a short connector hose with wormgear clamps, that spot is notorious for leaks. It may be dry so check it after a drive, then again an hour or so after you park it and again first thing in the morning. Mine has done it twice and I've adjusted the clamps and re-tightened them, the last time it ran down and was dripping from the back of my block making me think I had a bad rear seal. The first time I thought I had a leak at the front of the block.

When it first started it was a small damp place on the cement about 4" accross. Now it is 24" accross. I'm going to get under the truck this afternoon and see if the increased flow will let me see where it is coming from.
