My TURBO is gone at 40,600 miles

I took my truck to the dealer after I noticed oily seepage on the Intercooler hose. I took it to same dealer last JUNE for oily seepage on BACK of turbo ( Exhaust side). They said it was normal coating etc. Took it to a reputable second dealer last June. Same thing, normal. 14,000 miles later oil on back of turbo never really got worse but Intercooler hose was oily. They pulled the hose and sure enough, the inside was oiled pretty good and they advised me to drive it home and park it until Tuesday when the New turbo would be installed under the Cummins warranty.

Only thing I have to pay for is 150.00 for them to remove and reinstall my Pac-Brake so they can have access to the turbo. They gave me the option of taking it off myself which I cannot do while on vacation. They said they rarely ever see a turbo needing to be replaced. THey asked about my gauges and and explained that I have them to monitor ONLY ( WHich is true).

Scary thing is, I only noticed the oily symptoms because I service my own truck. What would have happened if someone who did not service it just kept driving it?

What would cause it to fail? Atleast they didn't blame the Pac Brake

Mine went out at 28,000, did not cost anything and that included oil, oil filter and fuel filter.

$150 to remove the Pac? The removal is the same as the stock elbow except for the air hose. $10 to R&R the air hose would be more fair.

I guess this BS is to be expected from the dealer.

Have them clean out the CAC to be safe or you will risk a runaway if the CAC is full of oil, then bye-bye motor.

Yes, they said there was oil inside the CAC, but not Pooled in there. He said it would be cleaned as far up as they needed to go. He agreed with the Run away, thats why he told me to drive it home and PARK it.

Probably $100 is the Cummins warranty deductable and $50 to pull the PacBrake. I would point out that they pull the stock elbow as part of the deal, the pac is the elbow, 2 seconds to unscrew the hose fitting, get real.

Many here have had their trubos go as well. I'd like mine to hold on until about 98K. Then I'd be good for a while longer.

I agree, run away is a true issue, good you can just park it.

Is the CAC the actual Aluminum deal behind the Radiator or just the tubing from the turbo to the Front?

It is the black aluminum deal in front of the radiator and has the A/C condensor bolted to it.

When ya'll say CAC are you refering to the intercooler? Why would oil cause a runaway? I'm asking because I honestly don't know.

In June of 07 I had to wait almost four weeks for a turbo and I was told I was lucky.

Yes, Charge Air Cooler is the intercooler. Oil in the intake path is an uncontrolled fuel supply. Uncontrolled fuel=runaway.

After talking to quite a few folks, aparently the 06 and 07 5.9's had a run of bad turbos.. Dealer of course would not admit it, but quite a few folks said they had theirs replaced and pretty low mileages. Mine STARTED to go when theirs did my dealer just now said it meets replacement criteria!

My original 03 Turbo would probably still be working if the factory hadnt goofed up the exhaust side clamp allowing it to grind the fins off into the exhaust pipe. Really cool sound!
