Is my transmission about to die?
Is my transmission about to die?
Right from the get go, when i bought this truck, the 47RE seemed sloppy. I cant hardly tell when the thing is shifting gears, the RPMs dont change more than 50 rpms between gears. I can only tell when it shifts, by the difference in tone the engine makes when it shifts, from being under more load. But when the TC locks up... wow... the RPMs drop from 2000 to 1200 under moderate acceleration. That cant be normal.
I have no idea what she was used for before i bought her. I may never know...
So, is it about to die? Should i start saving my pennies?+

The torque converters in these trucks are sloppy, even from the factory. I would start saving some pennies to at least have a new Valve Body and Tq converter put in. IF you plan to modify or add power, you may want to go ahead and have a fully built trans.

I think what you're seeing is the 3-4-lockup shift. It does both shifts at the same time and seems like too big of a jump. Normal. And annoying.
At light throttle the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are very smooth. It's not the converter its the fluid pressure and orifice sizes. In other words, the valve body. No problem unless you want harder shifts or start running more power. At about 90 hp increase the TC will be at it's max or begin to slip in lockup. Then you'll need a converter and a valve body.
For stock power and/or smooth shifting what you describe is normal.
