Transmission starting to die

At the beginning of my 20 min commute home i felt a slight shudder coming out of the parking lot. I thought it might be a bump until it happened again when i had to stop at a light and i shut the radio off but didn't hear any grinding. It got worse. Halfway home i couldn't get over 40mph and the tranny had a real rough time getting up to speed from even a slow roll. Pulled in the driveway and decided to back out to level ground to check the fluid. The truck shuddered bad in reverse even down the slope. Finally checked the trans fluid and it was a little over full and still red but smelled slightly burned. I'd like to get some idea what this is and why it came out of nowhere, and maybe how much it's going to set me under the bank?

Best thing to do is drop the pan and check your bands. Don't remember the specs. for adjustment off the top of my head but it's been posted many times, might check "tech facts" at the top of the page. You'll need an inch pound torque wrench to be accurate but if you have a lb torque wrench that goes low enough it will work in a pinch.

Post back what you find out.

Edit: As far as rebuild, I've rebuilt transmissions for less than $1000 but of course there are no expensive performance parts involved. I would say a regular rebuild with part and labor would be around $1800-2000 depending where you go.

How long has it been since the fluid and filter was changed, may be something as simple as a plugged filter. I was always told to check that first. If it is plugged and your pressure drops it will go into limp mode and start out in third gear, and sometimes do the opposite I beleive and stay only in low gear that might be the reason you couldn't go over 40mph. If you shut it off and start it again does it move good for a bit and then go back to limp mode. could be a couple other things making the pressure drop but its worth a shot...

what ever you do DONT put a stock TC back in there, and have the valvebody reworked with a transgo kit or get one already done.

i put my used oem converter back in when i fixed my transmission.my budget did not alow for a $1200 tc and a $500 valve body and $600 worth of clutches.my truck has 250,000 kilometers and the original tc still works fine.
