My 48re is eating govenor pressure solenoids

I don't know what else to say, about every 7K I need a new set. Does anyone make a heavy duty one Im using genuine mopar stuff now. I had another person tell me that they are so sensitive that some of the accessories I have in the truck might be causing electrical interference and messing them up. If that is so how would I fix it?

That would be a new one on me. What's the failure mode on the solenoids? Look OK, just no worky?

They just quit working, I run into a no shift, switch them out and everything is ok for another 7K.

My 48re in my 2005 started shifting crazy and erratic at 64K miles and the extended warranty replaced the solenoids in the tranny.....I tow all the time and plow snow with it every winter. I guess I am happy with that considering you need to replace them every 7K miles.

I had two on my 06,Dodge first replaced one after the first year ,then a year later it went again, they said it was from debris in it,so out came the tranny and they did a total rebuild on it for me under warranty at 70,000 km.They said the debris comes from the TC,they have cut them open before to see what was happening ,but did not elaborate further, they replaced the TC,clutches and solenoid .At recent RV show BD deisel had a beefed up 48re on display, the whole side was cut away so you could see the guts, lots of clutch packs in that unit.

Have you ever replaced the governor pressure transducer? From what I have read on here, it seems many replace both when one goes bad. Maybe the two are related in that a new solenoid helps compensate for a shady transducer?

Do you have a lot of metal "fuzz" on the magnet? There will always be some, but if you are getting a lot in 7K miles, then something is wrong. Is the filter sealing up well? Which filter are you using (metal casing, or all fiber)?

In a nut shell what kills them is band material (metal), getting into them. Look at the gasket part of the filter and make sure that it's getting a good seal. You can use an earlier filter (all fiber) with the newer trans, but make sure you are using the shorter screws for the earlier filter. If you use the later screws with the earlier filter, the screws will bottom out before the filter is truly tight.

I hope this helps...

Im using the metal casing filter, the fiber one hit the bottom of my BD tranny pan and would rub a hole in it if I ran it. I just replaced the governor pressure solenoid and the pressure transducer today and it had a very small amount of fuzz on the end nothing major whatsoever.

What accessories? If you are grounded gound, not overtaxing the electrical system, and have now scuff wires that sounds far fetched.

For a heavier duty solution here is the only one I have found.

Yeap, sounds just like you have clutch material in there stopping it up. Heard of it many times. The only thing you can do is do a fluid exchange/change the filter at the same time and hope for the best. Sounds like your in for a rebuild.

I do have alot of stuff in my truck, I have a cb, invertor for my laptop, gps. I have found a conversion to a gm solenoid that is supposed to be heavy duty but I would like to find someone who has used one first.

Just pulled the pan no clutch material whatsoever, this has been a ongoing problem with this truck, it is not a mechanical problem with clutches and so forth. The old tranny that was in the truck did the same thing, the new tranny which is in it now, only has 7K on it and just trashed its first one.

Tech at dealer near me said he sees a lot of erratic shifting on Chrysler trannies due to debris.Said some get fixed right up using a BG fliud exchange machine and replacing ALL the fliud.

If the old tranny did the same thing, the logical option would be something with the wiring that is killing the solenoid. Maybe it's getting too high (or low) of voltage and that overtaxes the solenoid? Maybe you could find another truck to compare to, and get voltage readings off of the different wires and see if there is a difference. Other options would be a chaffed wire shorting out, or maybe even a bad pin in your harness that is causing a voltage drop on the power supply wire?
