i was even worse.... when i lost my injector a powerstroke guy flagged me down to say may truck was smoking......i thought he was just being a jerk but i pulled over anyway. So i get out and my truck had made its fair share of oil and covered the whole underside of the truck. i just happened to be at the company and the night mechanic helped me change my oil so i could limp it home. To make matters worse the dodge dealer that is 1 mile away did not have a diesel mechanic . So i footed the bill to tow my beast 45min away and i tell tthem i had a bad injector. They tell me i cant give them a diagnosis but only the symptoms. I leave it for a week while i go back to ohio for thanksgiving. I come back and they changed my oil and creflashed my ecm........and tried to bill me for the oil change . Notice i didn't say they fixed my injector. So i leave it for another week and come to find out their "diesel mechanic" had just had a few diesel class and had to call his buddy to walk him through how to find the bad injector (they told me this at the dealer to explain why it took so long). So after they ordered my injector they tried to bill me for the oil change again . Needless to say i keep close tabs on everything.

Sorry to go on and on

It kind of makes you wonder what it takes to become a qualified diesel mechanic at Dodge . I wonder if they can actually fail the course our is it just a case of attend a few hours of films and off to the dealer to practice . When I purchased my truck I looked at all the service departments and asked them very simple questions and got very dumb answers at most so I purchased it 40 miles away from my home hoping for better service . I have come to the conclusion why by new , the answer at one time was warranty , now the only reason I see is the new car smell which I can buy in a bottle now and save thousands .

OK, first off glad all came out well but as you found out each dealer has it's own priorities and usually it's not you. My experiances like you were less than spectacular on injector failures, 2 different times. First was at major 5 star dealer, took 3 day to diganose and repair but after getting home found crankcase still highly contaminated. Called and was told to drive back in where they informed me that I would have to pay for 2nd oil change as they had already had to do one to diganose and "Warranty would not cover another one".. Also battled them and won on $100 deductable but lost and had to pay cost of second oil change ($40). 3 weeks later lost second one in Kentucky and stopped at a small town dealer where they only had 3 mechanics, 1 being diesel certified. He did an excellent job of diganosing and replacing injector, 2 days including ordering part and installing same at 4:30 PM to finish. Clean oil but no cleanup of truck. Went to quarter wash and after $3.00 got most off and drove home. Neither was great but second was a no battle experiance and even though I had to clean up the mess I felt better in the long run. That was on my 04.5 which is now gone for the 07 5.9 I now have.

I think the only requirement is to be able to identify, blindfolded, diesel fuel vs. gasoline, 2 out of 3 times.
