TQ slipping at 10k....This is bad news...

Man, I can't believe this. I love this truck. Just beginning to not love the tranny. Here's the scoop. I have 10,130 miles on her. I have been towing my 5100 lb boat/trailer. When accending steep hills, where my speed is 0-35mph, I have been shifting to 2nd. With the Tow/Haul mode on. The truck moves from 1st then to second fine. THe very second the TQ locks in second....Oh boy... That's when I hear it growl! As long as I leave my foot into it, it will growl. I would say it does this 3:5 times. I can't say I see the tach jump, but it does increase....The sound definetly seems like a hollow metal scraping sound. Anyway, spoke to dealer and went by them today. Took the boat in tow and went for a test drive. Guess what? It actually did it to the service guy too. Thank God! To make a long story short, I had him document what we decided. It's definetly a TQ. And it's on its way out! We decided to let her develop enough (get MUCH worse) then we'll just replace the tranny completely. It was either that or just put a TQ in it.

I can't believe it. The boat doesn't even weigh that much....Man, I have very little confidence in this tranny now...AT 10K miles!!!

I hadn't even had time for a TQ lock switch yet.

I honestly believe the reason this thing failed is that they allow the 2nd gear to even go into lockup. Way too much torque for that low of a gear.

Any thoughts?

Fluid level is fine.

If it was my truck I would not let the tranny get worse before they fixed it. Who knows if they try to void your warrant due to larger tires once the tranny is completely gone...then you're stuck paying for a whole tranny instead of just the TC.

There's really no excuse for the TC to go out on a lightly used stock truck with only 10k miles. That's just sad. Imagine how well it would hold up 100k miles from now towing 13k on a daily basis.

I am in the same boat. Mine has 7k on her and its terrible. My miliage has went to 8mpg and at times slips so bad that my moms 94 topaz will pull out of a field better than my truck. I only drive it when I have to. I cant get it to act up for the dealer and have been many times.

That's just not right. I say yall got a bad tranny. If they were that bad then you'd hear about it a lot more often.

The dealers put on costom wheels/tires everyday so I don't know they could use that to void warranty. I like the plan to let it get worse and replace the whole trans. I'd hasten that process as much as possible and get it over with before I was broken down in Timbuktu! Craig

I agree with that!! I can feel ... ever-so-lightly, a tiny slip in 3rd L/U now too. Funny, it really don't take long once they start slipping. Towing is the only way to get it to slip. So, I guess that's what I'll have to do.

Long term plan?

My Tranny went out at 3,000 miles. The Overdrive Planetary Gear came apart. The dealer had to rebuild the whole Tranny. Which ticked me off, I get a brand new truck, tranny goes and they rebuild it instead of a new one.

Not clear here. Are you saying the Jake caused the failure?

the Jake stops the motor while the tranny is still trying to go...
JAKES and EXHAUST brakes really aren't for autos...But somebody thought different

my freightliner (Yellowbird) has a 550 and with that truck loaded you NEVER need to touch the FOOT-brake b-cause the Jake worked that well.

the TC isn't made to hold that strongly

Now I got you. Funny, thats one of the questions I asked the service guy too. Seems the Jake really only puts the stopping power when the tranny goes into second. When in third its very little stopping force. When it hits 2nd at about 45ish, it REALLY kicks in then. Maybe I used it too much? I can bet my brake wear is VERY little.

That would be a convienant answer. BUT, I'm telling you, I really feel it was the L/U in 2nd that happens whenever the Tow/Haul mode button is lit up and the transmission lever is in 2nd, when it was the beginning to the end for the tranny. That motor is far too strong for that low a gear WHILE towing up a 15% hill. Maybe the exhaust brake didn't help. But that 2nd L/U really did it in. Poor TQ never saw it comming.

I would be very careful EVER doing that forcing L/U in 2nd while towing....
