To add to what Hounddog said, most Cummins owners notice a "chirp" when they shut down their engine. This is the water pump, accessories, etc. continuing to try to spin briefly against the serpentine belt when the engine suddenly stops due to all of the compression. It is normal.

the cummins does'nt like to be turned off so when you do sometimes it can be a little bit of a violent shake

you ever heard someone turn off a big rig engine...you can hear the big ars crank go dududeda and the whole rig shakes as the crank comes to a stop. this is the same as our trucks just on a lesser scale. my favorite is sometimes when you catch the engine just right and crank the truck you see the whole side of the truck lift up as the crankshafts torque comes to life. cool

The crankshaft alone in your Cummins is 120lbs.
That does not include the weight of each Rod and piston (about 10lbs+ each)

Good advice guys. Not my first diesel but my first big six. Seems less violent on the V-8s . Possibley something to do with the pistons/rods opposing each other. Or mabey just a lighter duty motor.
Thanx,
Phil

Hi, Ridgetop,

Somewhere on this vast site is a picture of a Cummins 5.9 rod standing up beside a Duramax rod. It's surprisingly larger than the Chevy's.

When I first got my truck, I was not aware of the shut-down chirp. I got my neighbor to shut it down while I watched, and even then I scratched my head some more. My dealer's comment: "They all do that."

The answer, of course, I found here.

The Powerstroke and Duramax alot more lighter duty than the Cummins ISB.
