Lift Pump Warranty
Lift Pump Warranty
I'm away from home for the winter and my lift pump has went out. The truck stalls frequently and shows code P0628. My odometer is just over 71,000 miles.
A local dealer said the warranty on the lift pump was with the 5yr / 100K factory warranty which would put me 3 months out of warranty since I bought the truck in Aug. 2003.
My warranty manual shows the Cummins warranty as a 7 yr / 100K with a $100 deductible in years 6 and 7. It doesn't specifically list the lift pump in the diesel engine list of coverages.
My question is under which warranty is the lift pump covered, and if it falls under the engine warrranty, 7 yr / 100K, how can I convince the local dealer otherwise?

I added a bd auxilliary to my truck, mounts between tank and on filter pump, works in conjunction with the factory one.... cost was low, and after 6 months of use it still shows 19 psi idle fuel pressure after making it through the fuel filter. bd makes it to work withthe factory, not sure what would happen if the factory would die I guess you can push through a dead one, seeing as trucks can pull through a dead one and still drive, albeit throwin a code.
Check your manual because mine (I'm in Cali) says the cummins diesel warranty BEGINS at the END of the 3 year 36. So I have an 03 and it should be covered to 100k OR 2013.
I bet a bunch of dealers just hope you don't catch this, I just asked even though I am still in the warranty and he said yes it is good till 2013.
Good luck

Might say it and its a normenclature mistake. You might get by with that but that is NOT how it was written.I handled and booked Chrysler as well as GM warranty for a number of years.Just like factory extended service contracts. They to start at the IN SERVICE date not at the END of the 3/36 etc.Try it and if it flys more power to you.
I had the same problem at 80k miles and only had to pay the $100 deductible. Of coarse it actually turned out to be a faulty PCM, but they did that for free along with some other random sensor they thought initially caused the problem. I think my point is that dealers operate in gray area constantly when it comes to warranty work. Like the previous guy suggested, throw it out the window and see if it flies.
I had the same problem with warranty work.I lost my water pump and they wanted to charge me the 100 dollar deductable even though I had under 5yrs and 69,000 miles. After a runner round and calling the dodge factory customer service twice, which on the second person agree with me that I did not have to pay a deductable,He went over the manual with me over the phone which said that to pay the deductable you have to have 5yrs and 70,000 mi.He contacted the dealer and the dealer gave me my $100 back.SO call the factory.
I just had my lift pump replaced on Tuesday. When I talked to the service writer on the phone, I told him that it was leaking, and it should be covered under the Cummins warranty, as I have 75k on the truck. He said to bring it in, and they would check on the warranty. When I got there, he said that my mileage was wrong on the truck, as his computer showed I had 79k on the truck (I take it there for $39 oil changes). I said no, it only has 75k, and it had 73k when I brought it in for the oil change. He said the warranty might be voided due to the mileage error, and I asked him why my oil change sticker said due at 80k, a 1k oil change interval? He went and got the service manager, and he asked if I tried to tighten the fuel fitting going into the pump, and I told him it didn't have a fitting to tighten, it was a pressed line. Then he said that my warranty probably wouldn't be honored, because I was running a programmer. I said that I wasn't, and he stated then why do you have gauges? So we discuss that and I finally get him to get a diesel tech out there, and he jumps up in the engine bay, says your pump is leaking, asked me how many miles I had, then said it would be covered under the Cumins warranty, and he would have it ready by noon the next day. Picked it up at 11am, payed the $100 deductable, and was on my way. Funy how the only person that had a clue was the tech!
The dealer service dept has a BIG BOOK called POLICY AND PROCHEDURES manual.I used it DAILY.It is suppose to be updated as updates are sent on a regular basis. It has ALL the WARRANTY guidelines. It states what is under the Cummins engine and fuel system warranty and which is power-train and when deductibles apply etc.It also breaks down EMISSION warranties and warranties by year model and so on.It should not be a guessing came with them. They HAVE the info at THEIR disposal and are suppose to know where to find the info.I at one time was a service manager of four product lines.Oldsmobile,Cadillac,Isuzu and Mazda.I had to find warranty/emission warranty's for service advisers a LOT.I used the same Policy and Procedures manual on Chrysler lines as some HAD 7/70 some had ONLY 3/36 and the Emission's warranty's changed from year to year on some. Its amazing these EMPLOYEES don't know where or how to get the info and quickly.I use to have to CORRECT REPS and show/prove to them what was what as sometimes they tried to deny claims etc.and THEY were incorrect.
