Lift pump leftovers

From what I've read, the factory lift pump should be located on the frame rail on a 2004. If the truck had issues with the LP, the dealer upgraded the truck to an in-tank model. Am I right?

I looked on my recently acquired rig and there's nothing but a bracket on the frame rail. There aren't any splices in the lines or anything. Obviously, there never was a pump there, or am I looking in the wrong place?

No your LP should have never been on the frame. From the factory it was either on the back of the FF canister or in the tank.

So from what I've heard (and I'm not an expert on the other years) is that the external ones up to 05 were on the "motor" either on the housing, under it, near it ect. I don't think they were on the frame rail (maybe the filter for the gas versions?) On your 04, it should be somewhere up front on the left side of the engine, or the drivers side under/behind the intake horn (it's tough to see) I'm sure somebody has a picture. The in tank, is well in tank. Best bet is to turn the key on, bump the starter (this will run it for 30 seconds) and listen near the gas tank and engine, you should hear a buzz (quiet).

If it hasn't been replaced, it's on the back of the fuel filter canister.

I don't see anything that looks like a pump behind the filter canister. I'll listen for it near the tank.

Thanks for the responses.

A little black thing on the back of the filter. If it is not there than it is in the tank.

Like ^^ he said. its a little black thing. it doesnt even look like a pump, it looks more like a inline gas filter. Pretty pathetic IMO (thats why they go out, but mine lasted 63k miles and still worked until i put my airdog in. That bracket you saw (in the pic) is the factory support bracket during manufacturing.

OK, I don't see anything behind the filter. The pump has to be in the tank.
Here's a pic of the connector on top of the tank and some pics around the filter.

From the top.

From the front.

Looking at the last picture it has been upgraded to an intank model. I can see the adaptor and banjo fitting. You should also have a sticker on the top radiator support rail. The very first picture is just a stock bracket on the rail that is not used. The 03-04.5 trucks had the original LP on the back of the filter housing. If they went bad under warranty they were retrofitted to an intank unit like yours was. All 05-07' trucks have the original intank LP.

Thanks Spooler, makes sense.
I was incorrect in my first post stating that the factory lift pump should be located on the frame rail. Rather, like you said, it was originally behind the filter, then upgraded to the tank.

So the adapter and banjo fitting you're talking about is the one in the next photo?

Doh, I just realized, it has to be the one on the left because the other one (with the arrow) is a return line.

From what I've read, I hope you are watching it with a gauge.
