Can anyone confirm if a PCM flash is really necessary?

I'm currently 400 miles from home, doing this job on my back, in the cold. I already have the new pump in the tank. Now I just have to drop the fender, take care of the wiring and hook up the fuel line.

Thanks.
Thought I'd post a follow-up since I've completed the lift pump swap/conversion...

1. A friend of mine knows a guy who's a tech at a Dodge dealer. Although he said it had probably been a year, he didn't "think" a PCM flash was necessary.

2. I got the truck running this evening and did a 25 mile road test. The truck ran fine and I don't have any service engine lights displaying. I'll scan for codes in the morning to be 100% sure. I did NOT get the PCM flashed. I did the entire job myself.

Regards,
-B

How could water get into the fuel system?

I have had the stock lift pump and common rail pump replaced by the dealer. 1 day later, they said my problems were water in the fuel. They drained the fuel tank, then said it was the fuel injectors, next the common rail pump again. The fuel sites I visit, the mechanic gets his diesel from as well. I do not have any ****** off neighbors or anyone who knows diesel and water do not mix. Could rain water get in the fuel tank if the new stock lift pump is not installed correctly? I have a dual fuel filter (water separator/fuel), but it does not run long enough to replace.

I just replaced my factory lift pump @ 121k miles. Ordered a new pump from Geno's for 180.00(canister mounted) and installed it less than 1 hour. Very simple installation. I think I would rather have a dry mounted pump than one mounted in the fuel tank. Simple for me is better. I just hope the new pump lasts as long as the original.

Went to DC stock in-tank from filter mount pump about 40 kmiles ago (~2 years), instruction sheet said "flash required", parts guy said not required per their service guys. Installed it myself, not flashed, no problems at all.

When you attached the grey wire into the multi pin block, was that the signal wire from the ECM to switch on pump? Or is the retro fit pump system switched on from another source separate from ECM?
