Lift Pump?

Is this still a problem in the 3rd gen HO's? The reason I ask is because my friend just bought an 03 CTD and I was wondering if the lift pump still fails on these or have they fixed it? Also did they fix the steering on these models so it's not loose anymore? Oh yeah, do they even make the SO anymore? Thanks

On my '03 the steering is nice and precise. There is no slop whatsoever. As for the lift pump, I haven't really heard of any widespread failures. The new common rail system has a totally redesigned fuel delivery system.

Re:Lift Pump?

No problem.

There aren't too many big issues that I am aware of. Some people have had cracked alternator mounting brackets. Quite a few people have the computer glitch that causes a random "check gauges" light to flash. I'm sure more people will chime in with additional info. Hope this helps.

Re:Lift Pump?

On another forum two members lift pumps have died on their '03. No other details on the failures. Interesting note that both trucks are in Canada.
Unlike the earlier 24v with the VP44 injection pump, when the lift pump dies on a '03, the engine won't run.

Does the '04 HO use the VP44 pump? Will the Cummins 600 use the VP44? Is there a filter between the tank and lift pump?

The new '03-04 uses the common rail pump. I think it's called the CP3. There's no prefilter between the tank and lift pump.

It seems to me that there is a pretty wide variance in the quality control on the lift pump. Peoples numbers on stock trucks vary wildly. Some of this certainly can be attributed to the different sender's and gauges, fuel filter cleanliness, etc. Still, its pretty clear these things are not exactly created equal.
