leaking transfer case
leaking transfer case
I was wondering what fluid to use on the transfer case? I have a rear seal slinging oil everywhere. Getting ready to put a new cerametalic clutch in, since I have to pull it out anyway might as well drain & fill the tranny & transfer case. thx in advance
The ATF+4 is a dealer only part!!! and you are supposed to change the oil every 24000 thousand miles. Keep records. If you don't have they will not even look at your truck. At least that is what happened to me.

You can use any ATF such as Dex 3 in the transfer case. Doesn't matter.

My rear extension housing on the transfer case is shot and started leaking too.
Fluid specified in the shop manual is ATF+4. For the most part it is a dealer only item, however there are a few other options.
Valvoline Max Life ATF can be used:

or you could use Redline Synthetic ATF or Amsoil.
Personally I wouldn't really worry too much about purchasing ATF+4 from the dealer since it is only going in the transfer case. If I had an automatic transmission this might be a different story. The transfer case seems pretty beefy and is not a DC specific item. It is made by New Venture Gear.

Depending on which model 4x4 you have, you will have either the NV271 or NV273 (Electric Switch on dash)
Just my .02

silver_goat - The same transfer case is in most 4X4vehicles (New Venture). Each auto manufacturer specifies their own fluid. You can look at a chevy and find the same case specifing Dex ATF. Its nothing more then gears and a chain. To the transfer case ATF is ATF. I personally use Redline but thats me. Others can use whatever ATF they perfer.

Thanks

I guess my point was to say you can just use anything is just a bit to broad. Any ATF is probably ok.

I agree with you that most auto makers push their own fluids, for obvious reasons. I think that ATF+4 is probably not the best choice for the xfer case but DC sets the spec. and using anything else can cause problems if you need warranty work later. I would have thought that something like 75-90 diff lube would be better because of the type of gears in the case.
