My transfer case is leaking ATF

My transfer case is leaking ATF from the seal between the front and back casings. In my reapair manual it says that there is just a "sealant beed" and not a gasket there. Does any know if the back half of the transfer case and be easily removed (once the tail housing is removed). Then I could just apply some new sealant.

I just don't want to crack the case open and half parts falling out.

I don't know now mechanically incilned you are but I can completely rebuild a t/case in about 30 minutes. All the pieces pretty much stay in one side.

Any suggestions on what sealant to use? Maybe RTV silicone?

I've got my transfercase laying on my tail gate right now. You don't want to pull it apart in the truck. As soon as you break it apart there are going to be a few pieces hit you in the head!
I was having a noise in 2WD so I pulled it out and apart and there are 3 broken snap rings! I'm glad I pulled it when I did. The only thing between the halves is RTV and that is all that's between the transmission and the transfer.

Well I did pull it apart in the truck. The only parts that came falling out were the sping and cup for the shift fork. I use blue RTV silicone, and after one day it doens't seem to leak.

I'm glad you didn't have any trouble with it! At least you were watching for falling parts!
