J Brake
J Brake
Hi, I am a "newbee" here. I am selling my 06 Cummins 3500 4.9L 1 Ton 4x4 which my Ex drove, I know little about it and a potential buyer asked me if it has a "motor brake" said it is also called a "JBrake". Now I did my homework before putting up for sale, but I missed that one. So, is this "JBrake/Motor Brake" standard on the 06? Where would I find it and what does it look like?
(I know I know...I sound like a ditz, especially here in this speciality forum, but thats why I joined. Learned how to drive it too....WOW! What a beast, this thing is all about Power!!! Like it more every time I drive it. Other than taking down the neighbors mailbox and hoppin a few curbs ... its been smooth sailing!

Thanks so much!

Welcome to the DTR Raelynn. What the buyer was refering to is an exhaust brake. often referred to as a Jake brake. Most people relate the Jake brakes to the ones on semi trucks. Ya know when you hear a big truck slow down and that loud growl? That's the jake. On the 6.7L Cummins we have a factory exhaust brake that's part of the variable geometry turbo. There will be a push button switch in the small panel just below the HVAC controls. to turn it on/off. I'm not sure if Dodge equipped the 2006 5.9L with an exhaust brake though. Someone more familar with that year will chime in pretty quick though.
Good luck selling!!!

In the 06, the jake brake switch is generally mounted to the gear shift **** on stick shifts.
There would also be a large belt driven vacuum pump on the left side of the engine, and the exhaust brake it's self at the turbo exhaust outlet has a large vacuum actuator.
If not equipped with an exhaust brake, there is just a plain cast elbow at the turbo exhaust outlet.

2006 did not come with an exhaust brake from the factory as an option.
If you look at the link below you'll see an exhaust brake, this would be mounted behind the turbo which if you're not familiar is on the passenger side where the exhaust drops from the engine.

While an exhaust brake wasn't installed at the factory, they were available as a dealer installed option, approved by Chrysler Corp. The brand was Jacobs and mine even came with fender insignia that says "Jake Brake". The ECM and 48RE tranny had been factory modified to function neatly with the brake. Originally it had a shifter mounted switch. I installed a dash mount switch to replace it since I thought it was cumbersome and ugly on the column shift lever.
Yeah. I installed one on my 03 myself. If I recall, I got it from the cummins parts house as it was cheaper than the dodge dealer.
Nice to have, especially if you tow heavy in hilly country.
I do wonder why they chose to make it vacuum actuated, though.
