I'm confused about 48re:UPDATE P. 2

I always thought the automatic that was mated to Cummins engines (from 2003.5 to 2006) was the 48re, which I also thought was a 4 speed.

Well, I bumped into a guy at the carwash last week and he claimed the '05 dually he was driving was a 5 speed automatic. I just chalked it up to his ignorance and let it go.

Today, I stopped and looked at a used '05 3500 at the Dodge dealer and they had the original sticker on the window and it said it had a 5 speed automatic!

What gives? Isn't the 48re a 4 speed?

Was he driving an 05 Chevy or Ford? Becuase the 4 in 48re stands for four speed and thats all that came in the autos. I think you could get a 5spd manual though. What it is their ignornace to the diesels. If the guy at the car wash had Hemi he has the 5spd auto. Hemi has 5spd and the diesel has a 4spd auto in those years. Go back and pop the hood. If its a big long straight motor with a C on top of it, its a Cummins with a 4spd. If its wide and says Hemi on a plastic panel its a Hemi and has a 5spd

Guys, let me be clear. The carwash dude was in fact driving a Cummins-powered Dodge dually and he said it was an '05. He told me it was a 5 speed auto.

Just two hours ago I was at the Dodge dealership looking at a used 3500 Quad Cab long bed (Dodge) with a Cummins. The original window sticker was taped to the window and it clearly said it had a "5 speed automatic" transmission.

Is Dodge just playing games with people? Why would they put it on the window sticker that it is a 5 speed auto?

becuase they have no sense. the auto is a 4 speed in the cummins as stated earlier. sounds like that guy was not to smart about his truck...must have bought it to make up for something

like a lack of intelligence

Welcome....same Goblin as on thedieselstop? Maybe the marketing Dept considers the O/D lockup as a 5th gear???.

As I understand it, the 48RE evolved from the Torqueflite 518, which evolved from the Torqueflite 727.

No doubt he is uneducated. He thinks the lockup in 4th is 5th gear. I was curious myself until I educated myself the first week I had it. Sure seems like a shift but it is not. The only 5 speed auto from the factory is mated with the 5.7 Hemi gas motor.

Still doesn't explain why the sticker says "5 speed automatic transmission."

I will try to get over there and take a pic with the dig camera.
