Idle drop and catch

I did some searching - but couldn't find anything similar..I'm seeing a strange thing on my truck - and it's getting more and more frequent. As I pull up to a stop sign and slide the clutch in, the engine idle will drop down low like it is going to stall, then right before it dies the computer saves it and brings it back up, with a little bit of an overshoot (1300 rpm maybe). It's like the clutch isn't dis engaging and then it breaks loose right before it brings the motor to a stall...but the clutch is disengaging. It isn't pulling the truck to try and keep going at all (like it would if it was realy the clutch not dis-engaging). It appears to purely a computer thing. My big concern is maybe the fuel lift pump is on its way out ?...but I thought the 3rd gens didn't have that issue like the 2nd gens... Thoughts, ideas, comments ???

Thanks,
Rob

Mine has done the exact same thing since the day I bought it. I thought it was a computer issue too but if it was, I would think the Smarty would eliminate it but it didn't. I would LOVE to know the answer to this. I know there are others on this forum with the same problem and nobody seems to know what causes it. As for the lift pumps, the 3rd gens see just as many issues, if not more, than the 2nd gens. If your lift pump is still the original, it is mounted on the back of the fuel filter canister and these pumps SUCK. If it failed under warranty, they most likely replaced it with an in-tank pump which is better, but still prone to failure.

Hmmm...Interesting. As for fuel (lift) pumps...I was under the (false) impression that the 3rd gens were good. But I was talking to a neighbor this morning with an '04 and he had troubles - as well as his brother on his '06. That kind of prompted my thinking that this strange phenomena was possibly a hint that my lift pump was about to die. So I check out a fuel pressure gauge at Genos garage...thinking I'll upgrade my dual gauge pod to a triple and slide a fuel pressure guage in there to keep an eye on it. However - I called the genos guy, and he says "ah- don't waste your money..the new common rails dont have the fuel pump problems that the 2nd gens do" Which is what I kind of thought all along...But after perusing this board (haven't done so in a long time) and talking to my neighbor - I'm thinking the genos guy is about as mis informed as me...I'm thinking it's time for fuel gauge. Mine is all original in that department. I have 59,000 miles on the truck...what's the average puke time for these things ??

From reading this forum, I don't think there really is a common mileage at which the lift pumps fail. The numbers are all across the board. Some fail within 30k miles, others have over 100k on the original pump. I have over 80k miles on my original pump and I'm waiting for it to puke at any time. It would be a good excuse to buy an AirDog. Just as a side note, they did away with the canister-mounted pump in 06 so everything from 06 up has the in-tank pump. Now, I don't want this thread to get sidetracked so does anybody know why they idle would do what misterKTM and I are describing?

Yeah, that idle thing is starting to get frequent enough that it is anoying. I would think someone has figure it out.

By the way (not to side track again...but...) what is a Smarty ?

Wow, 261 posts on here and you don't know what a Smarty is? Just kidding, man. A Smarty is (in my opinion as well as the majority of members here) the best programmer on the market for the Dodge CTD (Cummins Turbo Diesel). They ONLY make programmers for CTDs. I hope this isn't misconstrued as advertising but you can check out the link below for more information.

Yeah, like I said, I haven't done much surfing on the truck site here in a long time. When I came into post and check this out, It said my last visit was '06...oops, been a while. I special ordered my 03 in 2002 - so I have a pretty early truck. Of course being brand new engine and such, aftermarket selection was thin back then ..I went with edge because they were about the only option. I got the truck set up the way I wanted and have never had any trouble so after a couple of years I kind of dwindled down to not checking in here.

Understood. I have asked the question about the surging idle before but never really got an answer. See link to thread below.
