How do I tell if its an "HO" engine or not

I'm looking around for a cummins and while most are advertised as "cummins HO" diesel, some don't say at all. I have called on a couple for sale and the people didn't have any idea what I was talking about, they just know its a CTD. Is there an obvious way to tell by looking at the engine or is it listed in the door jamb or what? I really only want a "HO" cummins truck, and not the less powerfull version.

Thanks,
Jason

Driver's side of the timing cover. Sits on the engine sideways, like up and down. Kind of have to turn your head to see it.

Look at the 8th digit in the VIN. If its a "C" its an HO. If its a "6" its an SO. For what its worth 05+ are all HO's.

OK I thought I knew the difference, but I seem to keep reading different numbers... What is the HP/TQ of the HO vs. the SO? I thought I read the HO was 305/555 but I see guys saying they have a 600..?

03-04 the HO was 305/555. Mid year 2004 all trucks became HO's with 325/600. That number jumped again in 2005 to 325/610. Im not sure on the SO.

Who cares?

They're all great trucks. With a chip and boost elbow you'll level the playing field anyway. The real question should be: "how do I know if it's a 47RE?" (and even then it can be made as strong or stronger than a stock 48RE), otherwise, as long as the big "C" is on the fender- you really can't lose.
