How about another exhaust question? New truck, need avice!

Hey Guys!

Just signed the papers on a 2005 2500 QC 4x4 tonight! SOOO STOKED!! Had a 12v years ago, but had a 3 year break in a 1/2 ton. blegh. Great to be back in a Cummins!

So to the point...the previous owner had the cat and muffler taken out. Sounds great when goofing around....but its really just too loud. Maybe I'm a wimp now.....a few years ago I would have been like, screw neighbors...they need to know when I get home. lol...not any more. So I need to make it quieter.....that's where you folks come in.

So first thing...its an 05...so does that mean for sure that its 4" stock all the way from the turbo back? I crawled under w\ a tape measure and tried to eyeball it, and it looked like it was something more like 3-3/4? Was it just because i was using a tape and not a dial caliper? I've been searching on here for the past 2 days or so to really get a good feel for what folks like thats quiet, yet unrestrictive...but I keep seeing answers like the donaldson is quiet w\ a cat, but loud w\o a cat? So am kind of confused as to what to do....the one thing I DO know, is that it needs to get done soon. We have a few semi dealers here, so i imagine ill be able to find one of these locally. Don't really mind if its mbrp, mangaflow, donaldson, whatev.

So can anybody point me in the right direction on how to go w\o a cat? if at all possible, I'd like for it to be fairly quiet, but not too quiet at idle and under moderate acceleration...if i really rag on it, i don't mind if she sings.

So then, regardless of what can I get, I'm going to have to put it on. Are they made in a way that i can just cut out the straight pipe at the appropriate place and it will fit on w\ clamps, or will i need to weld it in place? Or will I even need to get collars of some kind??

Thanks a lot for any input! Can't wait to get started!

Yes a 05 is 4" all the way. I am in the same boat as you, I strait piped my truck and yea it's just way to loud. I am not sure what i'm going to do yet. There is just no one muffler that is perfect it's a lot of trial and error sadly. I think i'm going to try just the stock muffler, the 03-04 came with just that from the factory and seem to sound better, and they are not loud.

Congratz on the truck, i'm sure you'll enjoy it

run a search on Donaldson muffler...alot of guys use them on here. I tow alot and get no drone at all and the sound is great. I didnt want to keep the Cat on as I felt those were more restrictive than a straight through exhaust.

so a donaldson w\o a cat won't kill people w\ their windows down behind and to the right of the truck? and does it just clamp on?

I gotta agree w\ you on the cat...i don't want to see a mileage or power decrease by putting the cat back on!

Thanks for the input!!
