G56...Give me the truth please.

What is the truth on these tranny's? I understand that the with a 3.73 gear it is like having a 4.10. Are they dependable? I know they are relatively new to these trucks, but are there any real problems? Also can you still get high teens mileage out of an 06 truck? I am asking all these questions becasue I am having issues with my Ford and am considering a Dodge. Thanks in advance.

Well being they are new the jury is still out on reliability. Haven't seen one come in yet, but time will tell. I did get the oportunity to drive one finally and to me it shifts much nicer than the old 6 speed. And high teens out of an 06??? Haven't seen any numbers yet, but with the hp rating I would guess mid teens would be the norm.

I love the tranny compared to the PowerPukes knotchy shifting. I wish the overdrive was higher but oh well. Towing a 32 ft stock GN trailer with two horses about 4000# of Alfalfa I got about 12mpg (HC). If I drive empty at 65 the computer shows around 19.5 mpg and (HC) around 18.5-19.0mpg.

Hey SkyHarborCowboy mine is in the shop again. Puking and oil leaking. Also noticed a leak of tranny fluid. I almost bought a Cummins when I bought this one but got a better deal on the Ford. I appreciate the replies and anymore that follow.

So far I love my g56 I just wish it was a 7sp, if they would make it with about a .65-.70 overdrive it would be perfect.

That's funny... I was getting on the freeway this morning and after I hit 6, I wished there was a 7 & 8....

I don't understand what they were thinking on the gearing of the G56. I'm turning 2000 at 62-63mph empty.

Thumbs up

I haven't had any problems, but I do wish for a gear spliter in my future. If I keep the speeds 73 MPH or lower I get 18 MPG with only 4100 miles and counting.

Tony

Me too when I am running empty, I occasionally reach for the shifter to grab another gear. If the gearvenders was priced a bit better I would add one.

I really like my G56 compared to the old NV 6 sp. I'm getting 15.5 empty (all stop and go city driving), and about 17.5 highway. Only have 5200 miles on it so far. The gearing on the G56 allows slightly higher RPM for load-pulling, and with the higher RPM the computer doesn't have to fule as hard to hold the speed. This gives a little poorer milage running empty, but better milage than before when pullin a load. My old '03 had the NV5600 and got 11.7 highway pulling my 5ver after 20K miles; the new '05 with the G56 gets 12.5 pulling the 5ver and has not even broken in yet. This is at 65 mph.

i too love my G56!! i would be nice to have a 7th gear, i find myself trying to shift into 7th every once and a while. then i remember there is only 6. i got 19.5 during my trip to the OBX going about 65 mph on the way there. on the way back i only got 17.8 doing anyware between 75 and 80 mph.

I hate "New & Improved" when there was NOTHING wrong with old set-up. Now I understand progress we don't want wooded wheels..... but come on, a 2 piece flywheel !!!. I'll keep my 03 for a while that's for sure. Cast Iron box and 1 piece flywheel. The dual mass set-up doesn't even work in the powerjokes how's it gonna hold up to the Cummins???

I'm pretty happy with my 6-speed...only 2K miles though, so not much of a test. I'm getting 16.5 in the city - empty. I do wish for a 7th on the highway...I think it turns a little high in the rpm empty.

For maximum MPG go with the 3.73, 6 speed, and 2 WD. Mine is averaging 18.5 @ 80 mph, 21.5 @ 70 to 72. Careful going to 5th and not reverse. Takes a little time to get used to.
