I get the rattle in 5 and 6 but only in the mornings when its a little cool. During the day normal driving around town no rattle. Sometime a little hard to put in rev.

I love my 5600-- the gearing is perfect with 3.54s for running empty. 2K rpm is 72 mph, and also is peak torque-- a nice confluence of circumstances.

I like my 5600 too,

I wish I could get the 3.54's that were in my 99.

2006 dodge 6 speed vs. automatic

Today I spent a little time test driving new 2006 4x4 diesel mega cabs with 3:73 and standard size tires.

I was a little discouraged about the way Dodge set up their 6 speed manuals. I went to the dealer serious about a 6 speed manual and come away more interested in the auto and I'll tell you why. At 65 mph the 6 speed is turning at 2100 rpm and for what reason? It sure isn't for economy, most Cummins diesels I've been around like that 1700-1800 rpm range for economy. I don't know why Dodge wouldn't have shot for that range in their new 6 speed, might as well have 4:10's. The 48re I drove ran 1800 rpm at 65 mph just like my old 95 dodge diesel. According to the mileage gauges{if you can believe them} the auto got 2 miles/gallon better.

I guess, I thought it would have made a little sense to use 6th gear for empty running with economy and 5th for pulling trailers. But what do I know I'm no engineer.

You are right. I just got back from my first road trip. Driving at 70 mph got me 3 mpg less than driving at 63-64 mph. I drove the speed limits taking it easy on a 320 mile drive this weekend. On the way back I drove 7 miles per hour under the speed limit and ended up with much better mileage. The gearing in this G56 is just a shame.

There's something neat about getting 250 miles down the road with the tank showing full still though.

70 mph is 2250 rpm
63-64 is closer to 2000 rpm

Keep forgetting I only have 6 gears... It just seems like it needs 1 or 2 more... I was merging on the freeway off of a regular road w/ a 55MPH speed limit and forgot I was already in 6th and pushed the clutch and went for 7...

Can't say I'm too pleased with the final gear ratio. Can't wait for USGear to come out with an overdrive unit for this tranny. I'm first in line...

I can't wait for a 3.54 or something rear end offering. It appears that AAM makes a 3.54. Can anyone confirm availability and compatibility?

Stick some bigger tires on - it brings the effective gear ratio to where you want it. I am running 34 inch tires and it made a nice difference.

I believe p-pumped has a G56 with a dual disk and is pulling with it regularly. If it stands up to that kind of abuse, it must be tough. A dual disk clutch is about as far away from a DMF as you can get.

When US Gear comes out with their overdrive unit, I plan on having it installed, not doing it myself as I'm sure it's relatively involved. They said it would be at least another three months...
Hopefully someone else who has one of their units on a different tranny will chime in to specify how complicated the install is.
