G-56 Transmission noise

Has anyone noticed a noise in your transmission with the clutch pedal up in neutral at an idle? The noise is much louder when the truck is cold and is almost gone after it warms up.. When you depress the clutch pedal, the noise disappears.. It sounds like a dry bearing when the mainshaft is turning.. The truck has 61,000 miles on it and the ATF fluid was clean with no metal on the magnet when I changed it.. There is no grinding or vibrations coming out of the Tranny and it shifts good.. I took it to the dealer and they told me they were not sure if there is a problem or not? ISN'T THAT A WONDERFUL ANSWER?? Love the truck but I am concerned I might have a mechanical problem developing or maybe this noise is normal for the miles on the truck.. Thanks for your help! 2006 3500 4X4 Laramie 6 speed Dually Dave

Never noticed any trans noise, 54k miles on mine, so I'd say not normal, although what I've read is the dual mass flywheel does a good job of masking trans gear noise.
Installing my SB OFE clutch now and expect more noise.
Look at the G56 clutch install thread I started yesterday. One guy has a concoction of different oils to quiet the trans down.

I never had a noise with the stock clutch setup. But at 100k roughly it developed a vibration at idle which transferred through the shifter. I replaced the clutch assembly, solid fw etc, at 117k and the dmf was shot.

Thank you stickk.. I have been watching the dealership to see if they get another 6 speed in there so I could listen to another one.. This noise can only be heard if the radio is off and the heater blower motor off.. It is a rotating noise only in neutral when the truck is cold.. I just can't remember if the truck did this when it was new.. I would have thought I would have heard this noise when I bought this truck originally.. I chose an manual transmission for the reliabilty and now I'm not sure I made the right move.. Oh well, I'll post a message on here if I have problems with it in the future.. Thanks..

Thank you Grit Dog.. I am watching the dealership for another 6 speed I can listen to.. My truck only makes the noise when it is cold.. The heater blower motor has to be off and the radio off to hear it.. It is a rotating sound when the truck is idling in neutral.. If you push the clutch down, it is quiet.. It is definitely a mainshaft noise in the transmission but I am not sure if it made this noise when it was new or if the noise is getting worse.. I bought a manual for reliability but now I'm not sure I made the right decision? If the problem gets worse to where repairs are necessary, I'll post the outcome to try to help others.. Thanks....

Just got on here to do a search and found your thread. I have the identical situation. My truck only has about 28K miles on it. Same type of symptoms: Noise is worse when the tranny is cold, Noise goes away when you push the clutch in. I cannot hear the noise when I'm driving, only when sitting at idle.

Not sure whether to worry about it or not. Planning a cross country trip in the fall so I'd sure like to figure it out before then.

the dual mass flywheel is going out. stickk was very Lucky to get that many miles out of one. about 60,000 miles is the max. you need to go with a south bend kit. the new solid flywheel kit will be noisy compared to the dmf for the g56 because of the way the g56 is built so do not panic when a noise is there with the new clutch

Slorocco, After being concerned about this for a long time I found the problem which I Imagine is yours also! Under the console, there is a heavy rubber boot that is fastened to the metal floorboard and has a heavy rubber boot that slides up on the gear shiter.. There is a round part of the shifter that is maybe 2 inches in diameter that the rubber boot slips onto.. There is nothing that holds it on but the tension from the boot being stretched over it.. I cleaned the rubber boot with lacquer thinner and put epoxy on the rubber boot and zip tied it to the gear shift to hold it on until the epoxy dried.. I put the console back together and the noise is gone!! You can't hear anything, hot or cold.. I am sure this is going to be a regular issue with these G-56 trans owners.. Please check this out and e-mail me and let me know if this was your problem.. I might mention, the gear shift boot causing the problem is NOT the one you can see sitting in the truck.. There is another one under the console that fastens to the floorboard that slides up on the gearshift under the other boot.. 2006 3500 4X4 Laramie G-56 6 speed 65,000 miles Bone Stock!! I hope my post will help others........

Do you have any pictures?? I am just trying to picture the exact location of this boot and how hard it is to get at..

I have had a noise in mine for a couple of years, sounds like a throw out bearing or Pilot bearing but the shifting is still very good and the clutch does not slip.... I can only hear it with the clutch pushed half way in and it goes away when you push the clutch fully in..

Maybe this could help??

Thanks

Tim

I have had this noise issue since the truck had 7800 miles on it. I had the dealers transmission "specialist" drive with me and he said that was normal. I say BS man. The truck now has almost 30,000 miles and it has not got any louder. I might just have to check the boot. I have read on this forum about that boot being torn pretty easily.
