fuel pump questions - HELP!

Ok, so my truck died today on the highway. I am assuming fuel pump right off the bat because I got bad diesel 200 miles ago. Now my question is what pump do I need to replace. I hear some trucks had the intank and some had the lift pumps.

Here is the info on my truck.

Early 03 Standard Output Auto dually longbed.

On top of the tank where the 2 fuel lines go in there is a 4 wire plug that connects to the fuel housing. Is there a pump in there or is there just a level indicator?

There does not appear to be a pump on the frame rails at all.

Any ideas on if I have a the lift pump or the intank? Thanks!

First have you pulled any codes? Second , have you owned the truck since it was new.......it sounds like it has had the in tank retrofit pump placed into the tank........if so I'd go to a FASS or an Air Dog.......you won't find a stock LP on the frame rail.

Check engine light is not on.

Second owner, bought it 102k ago.

I read that there was a retrofit, but with only 4 wires that would leave 2 for sending unit, 2 for fuel pump? I would love to put a fass in, but I need it running tomorrow, so I am stuck with a oem replacement. Unless I can just toss another style pump in tank that is local?

How can I tell if it has a lifter pump?

Has the fuel filter been replaced since you received the bad fuel ? The 03 and 04s originally have cannister mounted fuel pumps. This cannister is where the fuel filter is located within the engine compartment (drivers side). You will see a yellow water relief valve at the bottom of the cannister. I have attached a link which illustrates the pump.

Have you checked for codes using the key trick? I have attached a link authored by forum member madhat. What codes are present?

I'll check the codes when I get home. Changed the ff right after I swapped fuel. I guess my question really would be how many wires are on the intank pump or where on the filter housing is the pump

The pump is located on the rear of the filter housing.

Ok, so I definitely have the LP on the fuel filter housing.

Does this mean that is in use still? Or do they just leave it there and add the in tank pump?

How many wires does the fuel level sending unit in the tank have? I really do not want to pull the bed to find out it was not retrofitted with the new setup.

If the lift pump is currently on the housing with the fuel line and harness connected, then it is the pump in use. If you had the dealer in tank unit, the canister mounted unit would not be there. A fuel line retrofit kit would be mounted to the cannister instead.

In any case, you don't want to be drawing through a dead pump. Geno's sells a cheap replacement for the fuel canister pump. Takes about 30 min. to install.....ask Dogzilla about it. Around $180.00 I think, and the dealer won't carry one (I don't believe).

Correct! The dealer does not offer the cannister mounted pumps. I provided a link to the Geno's offering in post #4.

Just picked up a Carter factory pump local for 180. Same one you guys are talking about, should i drain my entire tank before Installing it? I am thinking debris took it out?

lift pump

If you are installing the lp that goes on the filter can then trash did not take it out if put four of these on my 04, they have plastic pump on the side of fuel can on a hot block they just wear out fast, that why dodge won't carry them anymore, and put them in the fuel tank to keep them cool. I mounted one on my frame rail now when it goes out i just go to any parts store and get one. you need to get a banjo fitting for the fuel filter to run from the pump. By the way my truck has a few miles on it only 388,000. give or take a mile or two.
