Question Free spin kits...

Any body try to piece together a free spin kit to save $. I like the fact you can buy a full kit, but I really can't afford one. My '07 has almost 68k miles and I am getting nervous about my unit bearings. I go deep in the woods with my rv and don''t want to ride my wheeler out 60 miles to get home! I was thinking of trying to get a group buy going if there was a place to get the components.

From what I have read, it is certainly possible, but you may have to do a little machining on the OEM DRW wheel adapter to get it all to go together. No warranty on it, though.

My EMS kits get installed Tuesday. Thought I'd mention the races and studs are already installed, as are the bearings in the spindles, which is a change from earlier ones. EMS has now made it so no expensive presses or tools are needed for assembly.

The kit I got from Spyntec Industries was the same way. I have had it installed for two months now and no problems. When I installed I took a 4,000 mile trip the next week. When I installed it I also put in a set of Dynatrac BJ’s so it steers like a dream. No increase in MPG but I also installed a new set of more aggressive tires at the same time, more rolling resistance.

EMS kit is in and so far I'm happy with it. I reset my mileage meter to see if there is any change and was happy to see it jumped up 2.1mpg (solid 20.0 over 4500 miles to 22.1). I haven't yet run a tank through to do a hand calc, but I was pleased to see the change anyway. I also have the Dynatrac ball joints and I'm very pleased with them as well.

Good to see that some guys are seeing a mileage increase with these kits, unfortunately I'm not one of them, if there is a mileage increase for me its not measurable. But on the same note thats not why I installed the Dynatrac kit. Decreased wear and rebuildable parts were the main reason and the truck has a much lighter feel in the steering without all the added rotational mass.

If you have access to the machinery that might be needed to make salvage parts work it could be a good way to save money. The kits that are available are complete, priced well for what you get and come with a warranty, just something to ponder............

I didn't think I gain any fuel milage either but at a fuel stop I ran into a guy that said he did a coast test before and after and he said that it went a couple of hundred yards farther from 40mph to stop after the hubs were intalled. I read a articled in Diesel World that said there was 112lbs of parts that were not turning after the hubs were installed. I also read an article in Diesel Power that claimed about 1.3miles per gallon increase but I sure never experienced that kind of gain. I agree with the light steering and the fact that there are a lot of parts that are not wearing out but the big reason for me is with my NV5600 I can now use low range and back a heavy trailer around objects on dry pavement and be in low 2 wheel drive without riding the clutch.

My passenger side front bearings were so bad (cracked) that I'm thinking that is why my mileage increased (at least showing on the meter). I'm thinking there was so much rolling resistance from that bad bearing that it was actually costing me mileage. I'm probably now back to where it would have been with good front bearings.

We do not allow Group buys on DTR, too many ways for members to end up unhappy or ripped off since we have no control over it.
