First Oil Change

I have 1200 miles on my truck, and was wondering when I should do the first oil change. What kind of oil would you recommend on a new ctd ? This is my first deisel so I would like to know what brand of oil I should use. What kind of air filter is everyone using? Any pointers on these sort of things would be real helpful.
Thanks Wayne

Personally, I'm running Valvoline Premium Blue/Cummins oil. Be sure to run a good non synthetic diesel oil until broken in.

I think most folks run Fleetguard filters, either from Dodge, or cheaper at Cummins parts house, or a bunch of other suppliers.

Gino's also often has good prices on a package of air, fuel and oil filters...

Fleetguard Stratapore oil filter # LF16035. Rotella oil. 1 quart in the filter, 11 in the motor. just changed mine today for the first time. was very easy and didn't even spill any oil... no mess!!! 37Lbs tourqe on the drain plug btw.

Proguard 7 drop in air filter for now until I can afford an intake system which will be Proguard as well.

Fleetguard fuel filter # FS19579 FYI.

enjoy Jamie

On the "when" portion of your question, there has been some debate on this subject on this board. Do a search and I am sure you can find it. I fall on the side that says do an early change, 500 to 1500 miles range for the first one. After getting the oil analysis back on my first change at approximately 3,500 miles I wished that I had done it much sooner.

Good luck.

As long as you do the minimum time as required by the manual that is supplied with your truck then you are OK.
Of course as you can see most of us don't wait that long
I was running AMSOIL @ 5k miles and just lovin it

I went with 4,000 on my last three. This one gets 7500 miles out of Valvoline Premium Blue and Fleetguard filters since new. If my wallet's fat and I'm too lazy to order from Geno's in time, I buy a re-painted Fleetguard/Mopar filter from the dealer. Just turned 35,000 this week. It'll be broke in in about 30,000 more miles.

I went about 780 miles on mine before I changed it the very first time. Delo 400 and Fleetguard Stratapore filter. When I was filling the filter up, I left it about 3/4" below the top of the filter (after soaking in) so that I would be able to angle it around the wiring harness to get up to the mount.

I went 500 on my first change...... 1500 on my second, and 3000 on my last change......... I'm now running until 7500 as the manual says. It may have been over kill, but better over than under.....

I also use Delo oil with Mopar filters.................

I changed mine 1st time yesterday, 3300 miles. I ordered the Fleetgard filter package (4 oil, 2 fuel, 1 air) from Geno's, used Mobile Delvac from Wal Mart. The change was very easy, I didn't have any trouble getting the filter off as some have reported. I ordered the filter wrench from Geno's also, it's made by Lisle. The only scare I had was when it looked like the oil was coming out of the drain faster than it was going down the hole in the 3 gallon drain pan, I was afraid it was going to overflow

Using Mobil Delvac 1300 Super and always Fleetguard filters. Changing both oil and fuel every 5K mi. Was hard to go from 3K to 5K but the Cummins is better on oil than the Ford.
