Red face Extra lift pump

I have a 03 CTD HO 2500 Quadcab SLT nv5600 Packbrake Prodigy brake controller Westin steps Fumoto 115,000 mi

I am planning some long trips, so I've been looking for a bolt on lift pump that I could carry with my tools if mine goes out. Looked on the net, went to Napa auto parts and I'm not finding one for a spare for $100-200. Don't want to spend $500 for a fass at this time and don't want an in tank if I have a problem on the road.

Sometime back I thought I saw a Carter or Holly LP in the $150 range for a
3rd gen. Any help out there would be great.

for an 03 truck you would be best off to either get a replacement factory style lift pump or go ahead and eliminate the factory one now so that if you need to do a roadside repair you can.

If you leave the factory pump on the filter housing and it fails, you will not be able to push fuel thru it adequately to supply the CP3. So at that point even if you have a spare pump it will do you no good.

If you don't want to go aftermarket yet, go to your local Cummins dealer and get the factory pump that bolts onto the fuel filter housing. Much cheaper than the dealer and you can still get the original filter mounted pump to keep as a spare.

If you want to make it better and not have to worry again go to http://www.glacierdieselpower.com/
and look into getting a Walbro setup.

walbro pump reply

Gord,

Thanks for the great tip on the walbro. I looked at the 391 performance system for $379 plus pre-filter. Did you install this yourself ? If so how long did it take ?

This system looks like a good one to solve the lift pump failer worries.

The walbro set up is top notch. That is what I have been running for about the past 15,000 miles.

I just put on the GDP 391 - it's a NICE kit! The only tough part is dropping the tank to put in a bypass line. It would be a really good idea to buy the tank vent mod and do both while the tank is out. The vent mod puts the vent higher so you get more fuel in. Then use the old vent stub for the bypass connection for the Walbro. Someone sells the vent mod for about $40. I don't know who it is - I made my own. Craig

There is no reason to drop the tank to install the 391 on an '03. The bypass goes into the fill line.

The Walbro setup from Glacier Diesel is an excellent choice. Quiet, reliable, easy to install, etc.....

No need to drop the tank with the GDP Walbro kit. It's the FASS that requires the tank to drop for the bypass.

Only thing requiring a tank drop is to install the suction tube kit for any truck with an in-tank pump. Return is fed into the fill neck via a supplied return manifold.
