Extra Lift Pump "just in case"!

I hear of members carrying an extra Lift Pump. Where can I purchase one? and How much?

If you modify the fuel system, with an extra pump like a PE 4200 or 4100 will this cause warranty issues?

Speaking of lift pumps -------- how many of you ,who have had troubles have reported them to this site which is read by a lot of folks doing research before buying.
http://autos.msn.com/userreviews/ent...98&Src=VIP
Perhaps if enough reports surface, Dodge may develop a
different attitude? I doubt it, but at least it will help more folks know what Dodge does to apease its customers who have a problem . Report on the model that you have.

answer to questions= Dodge dealer is expensive. Cummins dealer cheaper, a parts house, try for number 5015723-AC

Sometimes it seems as though you may experience warranty issues if you don't use Mopar air in your tires! :

It has a lot to do with the dealership that you frequent. Some are more reasonable than others. This often stems from having knowledgeable diesel techs.

Some folks carry a spare pump, but most rely on their fuel pressure gauge to show a deterioration of pump performance. If you are traveling long range, though, it might not be such a bad idea.

If you want to try the PE pump, Rip's got them. Otherwise, as stated, you'll do better pricewise from Cummins. There's a location in Renton.

You could also try the Holley Black. Rod's got those.

Not a bad idea to carry one, especially on a trip. Make sure you get the latest version, probably which came on year truck, the 3990105 (think that is the number). Get it from your local Cummins dealer for between $145 and $160. Cheap insurance the way I look at it. Folks with pusher pumps are still losing lift pumps.

Re:Extra Lift Pump "just in case"!

The money you spend to have an extra one with you will more than likely be a fraction of what you will pay if you lose one out on the road somewhere in the middle of the night 35000 miles from the nearest repair shop that can't do it until the fifth Thursday of the 18'th month after the three week waiting period to get the pump.

Need I say more?

I remember the movie O Brother Where Art Thou where George Clooney says "ain't this place just a geographical oddity, 200 miles from everywhere". That will be what you face when your pump goes out.

I carry a spare fan or serpentine belt, as they are called now, and have for over 30 years now and have never broken one yet. Could be pschyological too.

Re:Extra Lift Pump "just in case"!

I had a fuel filter clog completely up on my 89 diesel to the point that it would just run enough to get it off the road and into a parking lot and guess where the fuel filter was, you guessed it, at the house. Had to sit there and wait for over two hours for someone to bring me a fuel filter and wrench from the house. Started carrying one after that in all three trucks and have never needed it since.

Lesson learned.

Does this mean that I can put a fuel filter in my toolbox, and the one I'm using will last the life of the engine? :

Hey Eric, talk to Ken Jones of Diesel Performance of Utah (801-791-2328). Between Rod's Wildcat Banjos and Ken's fuel line that goes between the lift pump and the filter (that is the most restrictive area) I picked up 2psi of FP and bout 4PSI WOT.

Roger

Re:Extra Lift Pump "just in case"!

If you use Ken's fuel line then you will only need 3 banjos. 1 regular and 2 with the schrader valve. I don't know where you are running your fuel line from but I had the banjos and fuel line first. One schrader on the bottom of the fuel filter. Took the schrader out and then connected my SS braided line there.

Roger
