Explain this black oil/soot in our 600/610 ?
Ya ok bigblock - I'll get right on that.. Are you in denial that the 600 engines are sootier than the 555's?
Trik - even though ours stay clear for so long compared to the 600's, as I mentioned and as I hope you'll soon find out, the 600's still get great oil analysis results. My benz turns the oil black literally before I leave the driveway after an oil change, and after 7500 miles I still have .01% soot or so... I'm sure your oil analysis will ease your mind.

Instead of using a dipstick, why don't people take a sample of their oil while it is draining and put it in a clear glass container of some standard size... maybe a shotglass ? Dipstick oil is pretty subjective, depending on the thickness of the film, etc. A shotglass is more standard.
If you want to see oil getting dirty in a hurry, check out used 7.3 Powerstroke oil. They have a 3500 mile change interval under towing usage.
I wonder if there is more blow by on the 600s due to higher cylinder pressures associated with the higher torque they put out ?

A diesel with clear looking oil is surprising.
My 91 turns black within 1000 miles. My 97 stays clean for 5,000 miles. The difference is the 97 "Killer B" engine has "micro-polished" rings and bore for reduced blow-by. Do you think we are now going backwards as cost saving measures?
I've got one of the 600's with the black oil, didn't really weird me out due to having owned a 6.2 Chevy. I sent off a sample to Blackstone, I'll post the results on here. 7500 miles on M1 Truck and SUV with a Stratopore filter, about 3000 of it highway miles, 1200 of it towing at high speed (70-75). Truck is stock except for what's in my sig, shouldn't have any bearing on results.
