600 vs 610

My father-in-law just got the exact same truck that I have, but it's a 05 with the 610 instead of the 600, like mine. We were looking under the hood last night and noticed a few differences.

1. The radiator connection side (driver’s side) is metal on mine. His plastic.

2. There is a plastic covered rectangle shaped box toward the front driver side of the valve cover on mine (see attached picture). On his it has been removed.

3. Tow/Haul. Mine will not shift into 4th gear when the tow/haul is engaged. His will.

Also, I noticed that his seems to run quieter too. I have about 10,000 more miles on mine than he does. Has anyone else noticed that their 600 or 610 have gotten louder the more "broken-in" it has gotten?

Anyone know about these differenced what the rectangular plastic thing on the 600's is for?

The radiator on my 4.5 600 is also plastic and I do not have a rectangular plastic box where you have circled. I would say its normal for the engine to get a little louder as it breaks in. Tow haul mode is supposed to electriclly prevent the shift to OD.

Well mine does. The picture I attached is right off the Cummins website. Anyone know what this is?

While we're at it, let's speculate (or maybe someone knows) how the Dodge boys squeezed the extra 10lbft out of this engine for 2005. Is it real or is it marketing spin to upstage Ford or GM?

Are you referring to the throttle linkage cover on the side?

My guess on the torque is that the motor already made 610 (or a little more), and they just uprated it a little to keep the pressure on ford and chevy.

Or, as someone else said, they used a thicker pen tip on the dyno plot!

Interesting...

Many wondered if the "600" made "600" after seeing a number of dyno runs.

The new '05's get full electronic "throttles". The older units needed a throttle cable for the trans, and there was a TPS sensor somewhere that fed the ECU. Now the pedal generates the TPS signal and the trans does not need the cable. My understanding was this allowed the "tow/haul" to be something more than just an OD lockout.

The box is just what stevenknapp said. On earlier engines, it held the cable actuated TPS. The cable came up from the accelerator pedal into the box and activated the linkage that triggered the TPS. Now the TPS is mounted by the accelerator so there is no cable into the engine bay and no housing for the TPS there.

and now, with tow/haul, they shift into 4th gear too. not to mention it's a lot easier to reach the fuel water drain lever.

I read on DTW site that this motor was rated up to 660 TQ by Cummins on different applications.

My 2005 auto (610) shifts into 4th when I engage the tow/haul mode - it just holds onto the gears a bit longer before shifting up.

In 2003, 2004, 2004.5 That button on the end of the right lever was a electronic o/d lock out (not a tow/haul button as in ferd and Chabby) for 2005 it is a tow/haul button and allows 2005's to haul a$$ with better lock up, higher rev shifts, and O/D speeds. K.S.
