Engine stopped running

I was driving up I-5 for 150 miles @65MPH. I stopped at McDonalds and went out and started the truck. As I pulled out of the parking lot, the truck died. I cranked it over for 15 seconds and it started again only to die right away. I did this a couple of times, but it would just die within 10 seconds or so. I waited about 3 minutes and tried again, and it started. I drove about 1.5 more hours and made it home. My fuel filter is clean and so is my air filter. Any idea what this could be? I have 140K on the truck. This also happened once a few weeks ago, but started back up with some cranking and never happened again util yesterday.

You will hear a lot of suggestions but I think the first would be to check to see if you are making oil (injector leaking down) the second would be do you have a fuel pressure gage as you need to see what the lift pump is doing and last but not least try it for a while with the EDGE box removed to make sure it is not causing you issues.

check your fuel pressure sounds like a lift pump usually when injectors start to bleed down they cause a hard to start problem

I unplugged the edge today and drove about 50 miles with my empty wells cargo. Everything seemed fine, but on the way home I was going up a slight grade on the highway and couldn't get over 50mph with an empty trailer. It was surging. I got to my driveway and the truck quit running again. I checked my oil and no rise or diesel smell with that. Is the pump in my tank on a 04.5 or near the engine. What can I expect for a repair bill and what kind of pump would you recommend? Thank you very much.

I had the same happen on my 04.5 and it was the lift pump. Lift pump is located on the firewall side of fuel filter.

The lift pump should be under warranty yet unless you have exceeded mileage limit.

It's bolted to the back of the fuel canister. about 2" round. You'll know when you see it. Covered under 7yr/100k cummins warranty. If in service longer than 5yr but less than 100k mile then $100 deductable. They will put the intank upgrade kit.

I think we have narrowed it down to the lift pump. Should I just put another stock unit on since I got 140K out of that one or spend more money for aftermarket? I don't plan on keeping the truck forever, or really modding anymore. Any thoughts would be appreciated. The price difference seems to be around $300.00 Mike

How many miles do you have on it? I have about 55,000 on mine and the dealer just replaced it. They charged me the hundred dollar deductable and a couple of weeks the sent me a check refunding it.
