Engine noise
It has been said retiming the fuel pump will stop the noisey clatter in the 07 5.9. Will this really work and will the darn thing get back out of time. The engine was very quiet when I bought it and now I have to shut it down to talk to someone standing next to it. Thanks, Don

I haven't tried it but retiming the pump should help, but you may not hit the sweet spot on the first try. I works because any engine, gas or diesel speeds up and slows down slightly between power impulses. The injection pump has pistons in it that load the pump's driven gear intermitantly. The noise comes from this driven gear knocking against it's drive gear. The idea of retiming is to get these two gears to work together.
Incidently, differences in power impulses are how misfire detection works on engines that have the feature. Also the pump can't go out of time once you adjust it, as long as the gear is torqued properly.
