Ems Locking hub kit on a 2007 DRW
#16
I just got through installing the EMS kit that eliminates the unit bearings on my dually...Went smoothly, took 5 hours including a dinner and a few beer breaks
I was impressed everything needed came with the kit other than bearing grease and tools
I really liked how the Lockout ended up being flush with my lugnut cover!! I used the 4" holesaw i bought for my b&W Hitch
I will report back later on how i like it mileage etc...I Hand calc every tank so time will tell if there is a noticeable improvement in mileage. I already love the 2wd low...its like the fords i have always been used to!

filled up yesterday after my usual mixed city highway driving and got 17.1 mpg, thats within my usual 16.5-17.5 range....3/4 of that tank was with the lckouts installed
Ran 250 miles today pulling 7500-12000 lbs and got 10.3mpg
ill be installing my gear vendors next week hopefully

Give it a few tankfuls I'm sure you'll see a minimum 1.5 mpg improvement I got 2mpg out of mine and think it's the best mod on my truck. I'm also running a gear vendors unit and pleased with that one too. Last night I filled up and did a hand calc at 20.082 mpg which is the first time I've ever cracked 20+. That's normal driving without babying it to get good mileage with plenty of 75/80 mph interstate cruising in the mix. My truck just went over 10K miles and has never been worked hard so it's not really broken in yet. I've seen other guys with these mods doing better, and alledgedly some without, but I'm happy with the numbers because from the dealer lot my truck would do good to get 16 mpg.

I wonder what kind of wheel grease some of you guys with hub kits went with? I'm using Amsoil GRG Series 2000 Syn Racing Grease. I did all my driveline stuff to amsoil and figured I'd give their grease a try just to see. It's a funny looking grease but I like it and will be using it from here on out in the hubs and the U and ball joints too.

Looks good!
I want to do this with my ride soon.
Does the rotor still just unbolt with the wheel spacer? Or do you have to disturb the bearings and get greasy like the "Oldskool" trucks?

rotor bolts from the backside....so you have to remove the hub like "oldschool"
I havent seen any difference in mpg yet....first tank was 17.1 which is normal....next tank was 10.3, but that was all towing 7-12k, im about to fill up here shortly and it looks like it will be right around 17 as usual
I still love the kit....using 2wd low for backing my gooseneck up my hill was priceless

Got 17.8 today....450 miles of city, highway and interstate combined with about 45 mins total idling
filled up at the same station i always do
It seems this kit has improved my mileage a bit, before i probably would have gotten around 16.5 with all the idling

Ive got a little over 3000 miles on it now, no problems and mileage is up about .8 mpg on average...
unloaded i havent gotten less than 17 since the kit..usually high 17's low 18's...before it was high 16's low 17's
now if i could ever get around to installing my dang gear vendors!

If you have a lot of uphill heavy loaded usage make sure you call GV first to see if the unit will hold up under YOUR requirements.
It's one of the CONS with the Unit.
Smaller U-Joint
frequent oil change & cleaning service
and non direct gear driven reverse. (conical clutch) in reverse
Those are the only CONS I can think of.
FOR ME the PROS are worth it.
Save your tail housing and get a stock drive shaft just in case you loose reverse you could then slap in the old stuff and be on the road till you get it repaired.
I may make up a weather proof PVC pipe container to keep up under the bed for a stock drive shaft and a waterproof 20 mm ammo can for the tail housing..... Just in case I burn out the conical clutch out in the boondocks.
I have no clue just how much torque and wear it will hold up to in reverse.
I have read her where a guy fried his reverse in his GV OD trying to get unstuck in the mud.

thats actually been one of my worries and why i havent installed it yet....
i wont be hauling 24000 pounds anymore....as i now have a 2000 KW t800 tractor with a c12 and eaton 10 spd to pul;l a 40 foot lowboy to move out backhoe and loader....so no more backing that up hills.
I still move 10-15k around pretty regular and im very hesistant....
When i ordered the GV unit they told me i would have no worries in reverse???
Bs i guess
