Question Electronic Clutch Fan

Well today, like most 2003-2004 trucks problem. My sensor from the fan to the frame plug disappeared. I noticed my temperatures rising while the truck was idling and I popped the hood, but the fan was working. Thing was that the fan wasn't working at the speed it needed to be working.

Got under the front of the truck and seen a plug hanging. Looked like the fan must have caught the wire/sensor from the fan to the frame plug.

So my question is; Do I have to change the whole fan and clutch assembly? or Can I just replace the sensor and plug that will plug into the frame?

You will need to replace the whole clutch assembly. Last time I checked there is two different part #'s for 03/04. One was way cheaper than the other. Mine for example was $580.00cdn. Now if the wires are just cut you may be able to splice them back together, but if pulled out of hub?

What pulls the wires on these things? Does the rotary connection seize and spin the side that should be stationary, thereby yanking the wires out? Inquiring minds want to know.

The wire is right next to the Fan. And if you hit a bump too hard, it usually gets caught into the fan. They are loose and just move around.

Bump for the night. Need some info on the Fan Clutch Assembly.

There is still a lot of wire hanging. I can Splice into the wiring, but how do I plug it into the other side plug? Just splice that side as well?

Did the plug get damaged also? First check to make sure none of the wires have been pulled from the hub assembly. A connector is good to have if you ever have to remove anything up front. The colors should match on both sides of plug so yes you can splice there too.

It would be worth trying to splice the wires together to make it work as long as none have been pulled out of the hub assembly. A replacement fan clutch is close to $500 and the only place you can get them is the dealership.

I changed mine to an electric fan setup when it went out a few weeks ago. I had a heck of a time getting mine off but once I broke the 36mm nut loose it went very quickly.

As a preventative measure, I considered sticking a tie wrap through the radiator and wrapping it around the cable. Kinda the same idea as mounting an aftermarket fan to the radiator.

explanation of fan in 2004.5 truck

can someone help me better understand the clutch fan assy on a dodge truck. I am assuming the idea is to not spin the fan unless the tempertaure sensor tells the system that cooling is desired. So when the fan is not needed, I am assuming that there is no hp loss with spinng the fan. When the fan is needed, it sounds as if an electrical signal is able to control the speed at which the fan spins relative to the engine speed.

Any help in explaining to me how the fan operates / is controlled would be appreciated.

Thanks
SAS
