Dirty turbo question
Dirty turbo question
Hello All,
I have the Scotty Ram Air III. Yesterday I took off the intake tube to take out the TAGIII unit to see if I thought the thing was restricting any air.. and yes to hear the sweet sound the the turbo.
. Anyway I noticed quite a bit of blackness on the fins and housing, it wiped off some with my finger.. little on the hot side
. Anyone know why it's getting dirty. Could there been too much oil when I installed the SRA III and it coated everything?
PS will it hurt anything with a layer of "soot" on it or should I try to clean the fins and inside housing? If so what do I use?
thanks for any input.
Jamie

Was it wet? as in oily wet? If so, then your turbo seal between the center section and the compressor is leaking, oil pressure is 40+ and in forcing its way past the seal and into the compressor housing, if it is just sooty, maybe too much oil during install.
I wish I could think of the name, but there is a cleaner designed especially for turbocharger impellars.
When everyone has to go to the Closed Crankcase Ventilation (CCV, I think Duramax already has it), The crankcase gases will be plumbed into the air intake duct right before the compressor inlet (only place not under boost). Then everyone will have this to deal with. I bet it becomes a service interval thing that you end up buying some Mopar rebadged cleaner for (ala change my axle oil every 15k miles).
Can't wait. 5% efficiency every 10k miles.

Sounds like it's normal. If you want to clean it up, hook on to a 10,000 lb trailer and run 75mph for 20 miles, then open it up and look at it. It will be nice and clean. sooty films are normal, oily films are bad news.

Be very careful about messing with the turbo.
1. Any oil leak is something to worry about. If a seal is leaking it could cause a runaway condition.
2. Spray cleaner used while the engine is running can cause the same condition.
3. Spray cleaner used while the engine is stopped could leave volatile fumes within the intake. Heating grids could cause a violent explosion under the right circumstances.
I'd do a careful wipedown and monitor the situation. Most probably it's only a bit of oil from the filter and nothing to be of concern.
