Determining an HO motor?

Hey all,

Simple question, forgive me if it's been answered, but I couldn't find it...

how do you determine if an '04 has an HO motor? (Not sure how to determine a 2004 from a 2004.5 either...)

Thanks!

Look at the mfg date on the door sticker. 4.5 began July 1 2004. The SO engine is 305hp and the HO is 315 hp. You'll find that rating on a sticker on the drivers side of the valve cover.

I don't believe that is correct for the SO vs HO engines. I've got an 03 HO with the 48RE and the sticker on the driver's side of the valve cover says 305hp. As far as I know the SO was only available in 03 on the 3rd Gens and it was under 300hp and had the 47RE if it had an automatic transmission.

Uhhh, no. That was the start of the 05 models, actually Aug 04 is about the earliest you will ever see a new MY build.

The 04.5 trucks were built starting Jan 04.

On the pre-04.5 trucks HP is listed on the left side of the VC and that determines SO\HO. Higher one is HO of course.

Simply look at the valve cover on the driver's side. Or look at the build date.

Anything built in late '03 (usually August or later) but before Jan 1, 2004 is an '04. HO is 305/555. SO is 235. I think the SO models that have a stick are 5 speeds while the HO has a 6 speed. I believe the axles are different too, but that might be harder to notice.

Anything built Jan 1, 2004 through about July '04 is an '04.5. HO is 325 HP and it has a cat.

I believe that was the hp rating on the SO California compliant engine.

235HP is correct for the SO in California, it's what I've got. 5 speed manual.
